Romania -
Austria
To travel from Romania to Austria by train, we recommend you a direct night train. You find the exact schedule and ticket prices via our booking links.
It is also possible to split your route. First from your departure place in Romania to Budapest (Hungary). From Budapest you continue by Railjet train to Austria (Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg).
It might be the case that you have to book more than one ticket.
1) First one from your departure place to the place you enter the international train to Austria (Bucharest, Brașov, Sighișoara, Arad, Timișoara)
2) Then for the international train itself.
3) And finally one in Austria if you continue to a smaller place.
Romania -
Bulgaria
Travel from Romania to Bulgaria by train. There are two rail connections between Romania and Bulgaria, both cross the Danube on a large bridge. From Giurgiu to Ruse (where the train from Bucharest to Sofia runs) and from Calafat to Vidin.
The tickets are available at the international ticket windows in larger railway stations in Romania. You can also try to book the train tickets on the websites of the Romanian and Bulgarian railway companies. If it is not possible to book your ticket in one step, buy one ticket from Romania to the border station (for example: Ruse) and from there a second ticket for your travel journey in Bulgaria.

Hungary
To travel from Romania to Hungary by train, buy your ticket from international ticket offices at stations in Romania or online on the website of CFR. There are a number of offers available, including discounts on regular one-way or return tickets as well as advance saver fares.
You can also buy online tickets from Hungarian Railways MAV START, however online tickets from MAV START have to be printed from ticket machines at stations in Hungary!
International services run mainly from Bucharest either via Brasov - Sibiu/Sighisoara - Simeria or Craiova - Timisoara to Arad and then via the Curtici/Lököshaza border crossing to Budapest. Additional international express trains run from Brasov - Cluj Napoca - Oradea via the Episcopia Bihor/Biharkeresztes border crossing to Budapest.
Romania -
Moldova
Travel from Romania to Moldova by overnight train on the route from Bucharest to Chisinau. The journey time is 14 hours. The train ticket price starts from 25 EUR. The train route runs via Iași (Romania) and Ungheni (Moldova).
The overnight train Bucharest to Chisinau offers the following service categories:
- 2nd class: 4-bed compartments. The ticket price 135 RON (28 EUR).
- 1st class: 2-bed compartments. The ticket price 290 RON (60 EUR).
The departure time in Bucharest is 19:15. The arrival time in Chisinau is 09:30.
Additionally there are local trains from Iași (Romania) across the border to Ungheni (Moldova). Regular train connections are available from Ungheni to Chisinau.

Serbia
If you want to travel from Romania to Serbia by train, the only connection is from Timisoara to Vrsac where two daily trains run. There are connecting trains from many destinations in Romania to Timisoara, including Brasov, Cluj and Bucharest and from Vrsac to Belgrade
Special offers are available for the trip from Timisoara to Belgrade. Buy it locally at a station in Romania. To get to Timisoara you can buy an online ticket from CFR (Romanian Railways) or buy a through ticket from your departure station to your destination in Serbia at a railway station.

Turkey
Travel from Romania to Turkey by direct overnight train. The daily overnight train from Bucharest to Istanbul has a journey time of 18:30 hours. Train tickets start from 52 EUR.
At off-season (October to May) you have to use connection trains to get to Dimitrovgrad (Bulgaria) where you can enter the overnight train. Travel from Bucharest via Ruse and Gorna Oryahovitsa to Dimitrovgrad (Bulgaria) where the night train departs at 22:40. You have enough time to change trains at each of these railway station.
The direct overnight train Bucharest to Istanbul departs at Bucharest Gara de Nord railway station at 11:00. The arrival time in Istanbul Halkali railway station is at 05:20 in the morning. After midnight at the Turkish border, you have to leave the train with all your luggage and put your luggage through an X-ray machine.
The ticket price is 38 EUR plus a supplement of 14 EUR for a berth in a 4 person compartment. Buy the ticket at the railway station in Bucharest or on the website of Romania railways CFR. Select "Halkali" as destination.
The arrival station Istanbul Halkali is located 25 kilometres outside of the historic city centre. Get by Marmaray suburban train directly to Istanbul Sirkeci railway station (the former historic railway station) and on to "Söğütlüçeşme", the departure station for the high-speed-trains in direction of Ankara. These suburban trains run every 15 minutes with a ticket fare of less than 2 EUR. The journey time to the historic city centre is 35 minutes.
Romania -
Ukraine
Travel from Romania to Ukraine by direct train. There is one overnight train available from Bucharest to Kiev.
Currently, the only border crossing with international trains between Romania and Ukraine is between Suceava and Vadul Siret. There are two daily trains. One runs from Bucharest to Vadul Siret. At Vadul Siret there are gauge changing facilities. And an overnight train from Bucharest to Kiev which runs once per week. You also have local trains running from Vadul Siret to Chernivtsi.
Another option to travel between the two countries is the border crossing between Sighetu Marmatiei and Solotvino. There are night trains from Timisoara and Bucharest to Sighetu. At Sighetu (Romania) across the border by foot to Solotvino (Ukraine). From there continue your journey by overnight train to Lviv or local train in towards Batovo. Or travel by bus to Rakhiv from where you can also continue your journey by train.
