You can reach the city, which was lost in 79 when Vesuvius erupted, by connections in direction Sorrento (from train station Naples Porta Nolana = very near to the Central Station).
Trains run about every half hour.
The breakpoint is Pompei ... dei Misteri.
The journey to get there is about 45 minutes.
The fare is about 3 EUR.
The entrance fee is EUR 11 per adult person.
One should definitely rent an audioguide (cost: 6,50 EUR), as on the site nearly no information boards exist. Everything is numbered and the information can only be obtained from the audio guide.
At the time of our visit many areas were closed and therefore not open to visitors. I think this is normal, as the area is constantly at work.
