Brief History

In the middle of the 19th century, the first railroad line in Croatia was opened, connecting Zagreb and Sisak. Since then, the passenger rail network in the country has continued to develop. Railway lines were built and modernized, allowing for better connections between different cities and regions in Croatia.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Croatia became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later known as the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Croatian railroads became part of the unified system of Yugoslav railroads, which stretched across the entire territory of the country.

After the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, Croatia gained independence. Croatian Railways (Hrvatske željeznice) was established and became the national railway company responsible for passenger and freight transportation within the country.

In recent years, Croatia has been actively modernizing its railway infrastructure and improving passenger services. Existing rail lines have been renovated, new trains have been put into service and modern technologies have been introduced to ensure safety and efficiency.

Today, Croatian passenger railroads provide domestic and international train services, connecting Croatia's main cities and towns with neighboring countries. The railway system continues to play an important role in the country's transportation network, offering an important mode of travel for locals and tourists alike.
