1a Travelling from Bucharest (Romania) to Budapest (Hungary)

Travel from Bucharest to Budapest by overnight train or by day train. The journey time is 15 hours. Train tickets start from 29 EUR.

The overnight train is comfortable and the recommended way of travel. It offers couchettes for 4 or 6 persons per compartment with ticket fares from 39 EUR. And sleeper compartments for one to three travellers with ticket fares from 55 EUR. The departure time in Bucharest is 17:45 and the arrival time in Budapest is 08:50.

Beside the overnight train there is a comfortable air-conditioned Intercity train which run at daytime. Ticket fares start from 29 EUR. The departure time in Bucharest is at 05:45 and the arrival time in Budapest is 19:50.

As third option there is the overnight train "Dacia Express". It offers sleeper compartments as well with shower and toilet. Its travel destination is Vienna (Austria), therefore the arrival time in Budapest is very early at 04:50. The departure time in Bucharest is 14:00. The ticket fares are the same like mentioned above.

All in all it is a recommended rail trip trough the beautiful scenery of the Carpathian mountains and into Transylvania.

Where to buy a ticket from Bucharest to Budapest?

Buy the train ticket at a railway station. Note: in some countries you have to pay a service fee at the ticket counter. The ticket can be purchased at a station in the country of departure, also sometimes in other countries.

1b Travelling from Budapest (Hungary) to Zagreb (Croatia)

Travel from Hungary to Croatia by direct day train. The journey time on the travel route from Budapest to Zagreb is eight hours. Buy saver fare tickets from 19 EUR.

In the summer months, Hungarian railways MAV offer night trains from Budapest to Rijeka and Split.

In Croatia you have a daily night train connection from Zagreb to Split. Dubrovnik is only accessible from Split by bus.

1c Travelling from Zagreb (Croatia) to Sesvete (Croatia)

To travel in Croatia by train, buy domestic train tickets locally at a railway station. Most tickets can also be purchased on the website of "HZ" (Croatian railways).

Train tickets for international journeys are only available at railway stations.

2a Travelling from Bucharest (Romania) to Belgrade (Serbia)

If you want to travel from Romania to Serbia by train, the only connection is from Timisoara to Vrsac where two daily trains run. There are connecting trains from many destinations in Romania to Timisoara, including Brasov, Cluj and Bucharest and from Vrsac to Belgrade

Special offers are available for the trip from Timisoara to Belgrade. Buy it locally at a station in Romania. To get to Timisoara you can buy an online ticket from CFR (Romanian Railways) or buy a through ticket from your departure station to your destination in Serbia at a railway station.

2b Travelling from Belgrade (Serbia) to Zagreb (Croatia)

Travel from Serbia to Croatia by direct train. There is one daily train connection on the main railway line between Belgrade and Zagreb. The journey time is eight hours. The train ticket fare is 29 EUR.
