1 Athens (Greece) - Patras (Greece) - Venice (Italy) - Stuttgart (Germany)

The route consist of more than one step. You have to buy several train tickets.

1a Travelling from Athens (Greece) to Patras (Greece)

Travel from Athens to Patras by train. The journey time is three hours. The ticket fare is 17 EUR. On half of the way in Kiato you change from the train to a bus of Greek railway which replace the train on the last part of the rout till Patras.

1b Travelling from Patras (Greece) to Venice (Italy)

Travel from Patras to Venice by ferry. The journey time is 32 hours and the ticket price starts at 90 EUR. The ferry company Superfast Ferries / ANEK Lines serves this route.

You will find these service categories on board of the ferry:

- standard inclinable seats which are the cheapest travel option
- shared cabins with beds: you share the cabin and the shower and toilet with other travellers.
- private cabins: from standard to luxury cabins with private bed, shower and toilet. This is the best option if you want privacy, travel with your family or friends.

The check-in time is two hours prior to departure.

How you get in Patras from the the train station to the ferry port:
You have to get from the railway station to the „New Port“ of Patras, which is 2 kilometers in the south of the railway station. Either walk within 30 minutes along the promenade or use the bus line number 18. It is a journey time of 10 minutes with hourly departures. The bus ticket price is 1,20 EUR.
In Patras you have a second port: the North Port which serves ferry routes to the Ionian Sea. Take bus line 18 or walk from there to the railway station within 10 minutes. The railway station is in the middle of both ports.

How you get in Venice from the ferry terminal to the train station:
Take bus line number 16 in front of the ferry terminal at bus stop „ Via Aautostrade del Mare“. Old information says you have to walk first to 800 meters to bus stop „Moranzani Elettronica“ - but this seems to be outdated. It is a journey time of 15 minutes. The bus ticket price is 1,50 EUR and available at a ticket machine or via app. Exit at the bus stop „Rizzardi Carrer“ just opposite of the railway station „Venezia Mestre“. The bus runs every hour.

Venice - Patras

1c Travelling from Venice (Italy) to Stuttgart (Germany)

To travel by train from Italy to Germany you have two main travel routes. The western route on the line Milan-Basel-Frankfurt. And the eastern route Verona-Munich.

German railways "Deutsche Bahn" offers special fare tickets called "Sparpreis Europa" to selected destinations in Italy starting from 19 EUR.

If you want to include a night train, have a look at the "Nightjet" train connections from Milan, Rome and Venice to Munich. Train tickets are available from 29 EUR.

Buy your tickets via the given booking links. There you will find as well the exact train schedules and ticket prices. If it is not possible to book your whole journey in one ticket, split it and buy two separated tickets.

2a Travelling from Athens (Greece) to Thessaloniki (Greece)

To travel by train from Athens to Thessaloniki, use one of the direct IC connections for day travel. There are usually five IC connections per day with a journey time of 4 hours.
The ticket price for a one-way journey starts from EUR 35 in second class.

There is one overnight train available with a journey time of seven hours. Ticket fare starts from EUR 20.

Thessaloniki - Athens

2b Travelling from Thessaloniki (Greece) to Belgrade (Serbia)

Travel from Thessaloniki to Belgrade by direct overnight train. The journey time is 14 hours.

Important note: this direct overnight train only runs in the summer months June to September. If the this train is not available you have to travel from Thessaloniki to Sofia. And from Sofia to Belgrade. Please search for these train connections to find details.

The departure time in Thessaloniki is 18:50. The arrival time in Belgrade (Topcider) is 08:40.

The overnight train offers one wagon with seats and one couchette-car with 6 beds per compartment. The couchette-car is recommended. Buy train tickets for 35 EUR. The supplement for the couchette-car is 8 EUR per person. Usually there is enough free seats and berths available even on the day of departure. Ask the conductor to optimize the occupancy of the couchette compartments if you want to have more space. Just be friendly.

2c Travelling from Belgrade (Serbia) to Budapest (Hungary)

Travel from Serbia to Hungary by direct train on the route from Belgrade, Novi Sad to Budapest.

There are saver fare tickets available from 15 EUR.

2021: the direct route Belgrade, Novi Sad to Budapest is under construction. The best option is to travel by train from Belgrade to Zagreb and from Zagreb to Budapest if you want to avoid changes and buses.

2d Travelling from Budapest (Hungary) to Stuttgart (Germany)

To travel from Budapest to Stuttgart, you have one direct day train. It is a Railjet train with departure in Budapest at 14:00 and arrival in Stuttgart at 23:00h. The journey time is 9 hours. Tickets are available from 39 Euro.
Optional you can also travel overnight.
Either from Budapest to Munich by night train EN462. Or by night train EN40462 from Budapest to Zurich. Both night trains offer seats, couchettes and sleepers. Then from Munich or Zurich to Stuttgart.

3a Travelling from Athens (Greece) to Patras (Greece)

Travel from Patras to Ancona by ferry. The journey time is 22 hours. The ticket price starts at 70 EUR. The ferry companies Superfast Ferries, ANEK Lines and Grimaldi Lines serve this route.

Frequent departures are available. The bus journey time is 10 minutes. You will depart from „Ancona Ferries Terminal“, the arrival place of all ferry companies. The bus ticket price is 1.50 EUR. Show your boarding pass and you may travel for free.
