Town Hall Tower

Rathausturm

From the 100 meter high tower of the town hall there is a good view of the city and into the countryside. The advantage of this tower is that you not only have to climb stairs, but a large part of the route you can cover up with a lift (to the platform at 68 m).   Note (May 2015): due to maintenance work, the tower is currently closed.

Castle Park Pillnitz

Schlosspark Pillnitz

The Pillnitz Castle and the Park are worth a day trip. You have to pay an entrance fee. Buy a combined ticket for the price of 8 EUR (Castle + Park). If you just want to walk through the park, it is cheaper. There is a ticket for 2 EUR. That's still affordable, I think. There are piers in Pillnitz for cruise boats and (at an other place) a ferry.

Café Zaza

This cafe is located in a former vineyard on Elbhang (it's above the Loschwitz Bridge/Loschwitzer Brücke = "Blue Wonder/Blaues Wunder" located). As a tourist you will hardly discover it, because it is not on the main tourist routes. There is a small garden area. From here you have a beautiful view. Opening times: In fine weather terrace from Tuesday to Sunday from 15:00 h

The three Elbschlösser

Die drei Elbschlösser

Not far from the center are three castles next to each other on the "Elbhang". These are the "Schloss Eckberg" (Castle Eckberg), "Schloss Albrechtsberg" (Castle Albrechtsberg) and the "Lingner Schloss" ("Schloss" means castle). The view from thence to the city of Dresden and the surrounding is picture-postcard beautiful. On good weather you have a view even to the Saxon Switzerland ("Sächsischen Schweiz"). While "Schloss Eckberg" and "Schloss Albrechtsberg" are very fine, the restaurant at "Lingner Schloss" is more for "people's" (with garden restaurant) - the Lingnerterrassen.

Café Alte Meister

The cafe (and restaurant) in the picture gallery (even without visiting the exhibition accessible). In summer you can sit outside. From the café you have the (perhaps?) the most beautiful views of the theater square. However, the restaurant has high prices. The freshly squeezed orange juice is unreasonably expensive. But okay for a short espresso break. *** Opening times *** open daily from 11:00 h

Schillergarten

Located right on the banks of the Elbe, below the Loschwitz Bridge (the so-called "Blue Wonder") on Elbe Cycle Path. Cosy restaurant and large beer garden. Good selection of food and drinks at reasonable prices and in good quality. We have been here several times as a guest (both indoors and outdoors). *** Opening times *** open daily from 11:00h to 01:00h *** My Opinion *** Directly opposite, on the other bank of the river Elbe (in the Loschwitz district of Dresden) are two other beer gardens - the Körnergarten and the Elbegarten. You sit there nice as well. If you just want a drink, it's all right. For food we personally prefer the Schillergarten.

Laubegast

Today Dresdner district Laubegast was formerly a fishing village. Since the early 1920s, it belongs to the city of Dresden. Laubegast could - even as many other district - preserve its rural character. I like it here very much. You get here from the city center of Dresden by public transportation within half an hour. Very comfortable by tram line 4. From the tram terminus it is about 100 m to the river Elbe. One can walk along the "Laubegaster Ufer" (along the river), take a seat on the benches at Altlaubegast and watch passing the old paddle steamers. There are several offers to eat, also along the river.
