Good to know:

You don't have to worry about many things when Interrailing in Bulgaria. The only train company is State Railways BDZ, operating all trains. The main routes run from Sofia towards the Black Sea from West to East across the country, connecting the important cities of Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas to the capital. International routes run from Sofia to Istanbul, Thessaloniki, Belgrade, Budapest and Bucharest. On main lines there are frequent connections, however not running at regular intervals, so you shouldn't miss your train if you dont want to wait long for the next one.

Timetables for Bulgaria are available in our schedule planner or the Interrail app which include all trains and timings. However we recommend to check timings on the website of BDZ or locally.

Reservations for international trains are sold at RILA travel agencies located at large stations: Sofia, Varna, Burgas, Plovdiv, Ruse, Pleven, Gorna Orjahovitsa, Vratsa, Stara Zagora, Veliko Tarnovo, Blagoevgrad, Vidin.

Bulgaria uses the Cyrillic alphabet, so most information will be in Cyrillic only. It helps to have a list of basic words, city names etc in both Cyrillic and Latin alphabet with you.
