Brief History

The history of Czech railways dates back to the 19th century when the first line was established in 1839, connecting Vienna and Brno. Over time, the railway network in Czechia expanded, linking various cities and regions.
During the 20th century, Czech railways faced challenges due to political and historical events. Despite damage incurred during World War II, the railways were rebuilt and upgraded after the war. The communist regime in Czechoslovakia, starting in 1948, brought about nationalization, leading to the formation of Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). This era witnessed the introduction of new technologies and modernization efforts.
Following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, Czech Railways (ČD) became the state enterprise of the newly formed Czech Republic. Subsequent modernization initiatives have focused on implementing advanced technologies and enhancing passenger and freight services.
Today, Czech railways play a vital role in the country's transportation infrastructure, catering to domestic and international travel needs. The railways continue to evolve and improve, providing efficient and reliable transportation for both passengers and freight.

Tourist / scenic routes in Czech Republic.

Olomouc
The sixth most populous city in the Czech Republic, this city with a well-preserved and deeply rooted history definitely deserves a place on every Czech railroad adventure itinerary.
While Olomouc's past is reflected in its famous baroque architecture and squares, its trendy coffee shops, local eateries and colorful street art give the city a young and quirky spirit.
Several trains depart daily from Prague to Olomouc. After arriving in Olomouc it is best to take the streetcar, which runs from the train station to the city center, which is about two to three kilometers away.

Ostrava
In the far east of the Czech Republic lies Ostrava, right on the border with Poland. Home to just under 300,000 people, the city has an industrial history and an innovative future
Ostrava is easily accessible from Olomouc or Prague via České Drahy. The city has five train stations, the main one being hlavní nádraží. Svinov is also a station where you will find several options for day trips from Ostrava. Getting around Ostrava is fairly easy thanks to the reliable streetcar and bus lines.
Upon arrival, the first thing we did was go to the New Town Hall observation tower. From a height of 73 meters it offered a stunning panorama of the city, with the Beskids Mountains as a backdrop. Inner tip: go there at dusk-the sky was so colorful!
