Departure in Stockholm

My train in Stockholm Central Station departs from Platform 1. After arriving this morning with the night train from Narvik, I don’t buy any food, since I want to try out the dining car or rather the board bistro of the Snabbtågs. Theoretically, with my First Class ticket I would have access to the SJ Lounge of the central station, but I rather spend my time on the Platform, especially because the weather is so lovely.

If you like, you can securely put your belongings in one of the luggage lockers. These are being paid and handled with a terminal.

The Snabbtåg arrives perfectly on time and I’m about to board on a journey from cutting through Sweden from East to West.

Tickets for the SJ Snabbtåg X2000 from Stockholm to Göteborg

The ticket prices for the train connection from Stockholm to Göteborg are dependent on the train’s occupancy. During peak times it’s more expensive, if you book early, you’ll save some money. Tickets for the Second Class are available from SEK 95 (Euro 19) and First Class tickets start at SEK 295 (Euro 29).

I bought my ticket with ACPRail. Of course, you can also buy them at Omio and directly with the SJ. If you buy your ticket at one of the first three links, rail.cc will get a small commission, to further be able to offer free content like this blog – of course the price will stay the same for you. Thank you so much! :)

My journey is on time, the free Wi-Fi is fast and there are power sockets at every seat in the First and Second Class.

Here you will find a few pictures of the trip through the most beautiful Swedish landscapes. :)

Travelling First Class from Stockholm to Göteborg

I planned my trip during low season quite some time ahead, which helped me to get a cheap First Class ticket. Living large. ;)

The seats are super comfortable and I had a lot of space. There is a power socket under every seat and a foldable table, whereas four seats facing each other have a big table in the middle. The interior is truly cosy and relaxed. At the end of the First Class carrier I can stock up on free coffee, tea and water. Just have a look at the pictures.

Food options in the dining car

While travelling during the day, I think one shouldn’t miss a visit to the dining car/board bistro (either way you want to call it). There is a refrigerated section with a wide selection of organic food. The prices are okay, since we’re in a train in Scandinavia. For you, as an example … the shrimp sandwich shown on the pictures costs SEK 129 (€12), a vegetarian wrap sets you back SEK 59, a cheese sandwich costs SEK 32. You can buy a breakfast box, including a coffee for SEK 65 and mineral water for SEK 20. I enjoy my purchase very much!

Arrival in Göteborg

My train arrives on time. In Göteborg, there is a connection towards the South, or, in my case – after an hour layover – towards Oslo, Norway. Of course, I could have continued straight from Stockholm to Oslo … but my goal was to test out the route. ;)

Interrail and Eurail in the SJ Snabbtåg (X2000)

For the SJ Snabbtåg (often named “X2000” or “X2” in the timetables), you’ll need a reservation as a Interrail- or Eurail-Pass holder, which costs SEK 75 in the Second, and SEK 165 in the First Class. You can purchase your reservation with ACPRail or the SJ. Instructions SJ: Choose route, select “Add customer card”, click and add “Interrail or Eurail pass”.

You also have the option to use the SJ regional train, which runs about every two hours, but taking around 5 hours for the trip, it’s a little slower but free (with Interrail or Eurail).

Spending the night in Stockholm and Göteborg

This time I arrived in Stockholm with a night train and continued my travels after a quick layover in Göteborg towards Oslo. Generally speaking, Scandinavia is expensive, referring to places to stay. From earlier stays, I can recommend the Radisson Blu Waterfront, close to the main station – if you book early enough, you can get “cheap” offers. For Göteborg, I would recommend the STF Göteborg City Hotel, which is located around 5 minutes by food from the station. Of course, there are a lot more places to choose from.

My review of the train trip from Stockholm to Göteborg in the SJ Snabbtåg (X2000)

The journey was very relaxed and I really liked the food in the restaurant car – it was fresh. The seats in the First Class were more than comfortable, my train ticket was cheap and the train on time. The SJ Snabbtåg (X2000) might be a little outdated, but still somewhat is my favourite in Europe. Any time again! :)
