From Göteborg (Gothenburg) in Sweden to Oslo in Norway, there are actually up to three direct trains every day. For the distance of 349 km, the train takes around 4 hours. You can read about my experience with the train tickets and why I love Norwegian trains so much.
Departure in Göteborg
Just having arrived in Göteborg main station with the SJ Snabbtåg (X2000)SJ Snabbtåg (X2000) from Stockholm, I instantly continue towards Oslo, because I want to take the night train to Bergen the same night. What a sunny day! Daylight hours are already a bit longer; perfect for a chilled trip from Sweden to Norway through beautiful landscapes.
How to buy tickets for the VY Regiontog from Göteborg to Stockholm
The ticket price depends on the train’s occupancy. You can get Second Class tickets for SEK 299 (€29), since there is not really a First Class in Norway. That’d be called “VY Komfort”, which offers a little more space, as well as free water and coffee. The cheap ticket price is often also available on short notice, too, because the trains are in competition with the busses, which are, in fact, sometimes faster. Anyway, I recommend the train.
You can buy your ticket here with ACPRail. There you can also find buses for comparison, if you’re curious. Of course, you can also find tickets at Omio, the SJ and VY. With using the first two links, rail.cc will get a small commission, that finances all the free content (like this blog) – the price will stay the same for you, of course. Thank you so much! ?

The trip from Göteborg to Oslo
The travel time for the 349 km long journey between the train stations Göteborg Centralstation and Oslo Sentralstasjon is around for hours. There is a connection in the morning at 06:55h, during the day at 13:00h and in the evening at 17:55h. You can find the exact timetable at ACPRail, Omio or the SJ.
At Göteborg station, the train is filling up really quickly. I chose a seat in the very front of the train, hoping that most of the passengers take the first free seats. And indeed, I can keep my double seat to myself - perfect for taking pictures. In Trollhättan, the first stop of the journey, the train empties again. Most of the passengers were commuters on the way home.
Further stops are Öxnered, Ed, Halden, Sarpsborg, Fredrikstad, Råde, Rygge, Moss and Ski.
My train is continuously on time.
There definitely is Wi-Fi in Norway, whereas I haven’t checked it on the Swedish side, yet.

Arrival in Oslo
My train arrives Oslo on time and after a two-hour-long layover, I continue my trip in the evening with the night train to Bergen. There is also a connection to the night train to Trondheim and the night train to Stavanger.
Regiontog from Göteborg in Oslo
At Oslo’s main station, there are several small supermarkets, where you can buy everything you need. Prices are normal. Directly at the main station, you will find the opera house, where you can have a seat and take a break.
Interrail and Eurail in the train from Göteborg to Oslo
Good news: You can use this Regiontog train for free and without reservation, if you are an Interrail or Eurail pass holder.
Staying overnight in Göteborg and Oslo
Göteborg was just a quick layover for me this time. From earlier stays I can recommend the STF Göteborg City Hotel. It’s just 5 minutes by foot from the train station. In Oslo, I instantly connected to the night train to Bergen. Normally, I like spending the night in night trains in rather expensive countries. Apart from that, I can recommend the Comfort Hotel Grand Central, near the train station from earlier stays, as well. As usual: you can save a lot of money, if you book in advance and avoid travelling during high-season.
My review of the train trip from Göteborg to Oslo in the VY Regiontog
A relaxed journey with fair ticket prices. The view is beautiful, the seats comfortable, and there was electricity and Wi-Fi. My clear recommendation for this trip between Göteborg and Oslo. And I’m sure it’s better than the bus. :)
