Intercity trains are the backbone of long distance passenger traffic in Greece. TRAINOSE operates Intercity services on the following routes:
- Athens to Thessaloniki (five trains)
- Thessaloniki to Alexandroupoli and Dikaia (one train)
- Thessaloniki to Florina (three trains)
On the line from Athens to Thessaloniki trains consist of modern coaches, while the Intercity trains from Thessaloniki to Dikaia and Florina are provided by older, refurbished class 520 diesel trains.
- 2nd and 1st class seats on all trains

- bicycle transport possible on the Athens to Thessaloniki trains
- facilites for the disabled on the Athens to Thessaloniki trains EURAIL
Seat reservation is compulsory. For Interrail and Balkan Flexi Pass holders the reservation fee includes an additional supplement. Eurail passholders have to pay the seat reservation fee only.
The price of the supplement depends on the distance travelled.
You can avoid paying the expensive reservation by travelling with regular trains instead. We have listed different options to avoid reservations below:
Athens - Thessaloniki:
Travel with the direct train Athens - Kalambaka (leaving in the morning) to Palaeofarsalos. Change there to another regional train to Thessaloniki.
Alternatively, travel with the direct overnight train.
In the return direction, take a regional train from Thessaloniki to Palaeofarsalos in the afternoon and change there to the train coming from Kalambaka to Athens, arriving in the late evening.
Thessaloniki - Alexandroupoli - Dikaia:
Travel with the morning departure from Thessaloniki to Alexandroupoli (coming overnight from Athens). In Alexandroupoli you can change to another train to Dikaia.
In the opposite direction, take the afternoon departure from Alexandroupoli to Thessaloniki (continuing overnight to Athens). Connection from Dikaia available.
Thessaloniki - Florina:
No alternative train service available.
Athens - Thessaloniki | Thessaloniki - Dikaia | Thessaloniki - Florina
