Travel from Tbilisi to Batumi by direct train of Georgian railways. The journey time is 5:30 hours. The train ticket fare is 35 GEL (12 EUR) in 2nd class and 75 GEL (26 EUR) in 1st class.

The departure time in Tbilisi is 08:00. The arrival time in Batumi is 13:30.

Where to buy a ticket from Tbilisi to Batumi?

Buy the train ticket at a railway station. Note: in some countries you have to pay a service fee at the ticket counter. The ticket can be purchased at a station in the country of departure, also sometimes in other countries.

1b Travelling from Batumi (Georgia) to Kars (Turkey)

To travel from Georgia to Turkey by train, you have to make a detour via Russia. Therefore a bus connection from Georgia to Turkey is a much faster option.

Therefore, take first a train from Tbilisi (Georgia) to Batumi (Georgia).

One bus line is from Batumi (Georgia) to Trabzon (Turkey) with at least four connections daily for about EUR 15. From Batumi (Georgia) to Istanbul (Turkey) at least two connections daily for about EUR 25. Buy this bus ticket online at Metro Turizm.
In Trabzon (Turkey) you do not have a connection to the rail network of Turkey. Therefore, the easiest way is to continue with the bus to Ankara or Istanbul.

An other option is by bus from Batumi (Georgia) to Kars (Turkey). In Kars (Turkey) you change to the train to Ankara and Istanbul.

Border crossing is currently: you leave the bus with the luggage before the border, cross the border by foot (easy) and after the border the bus picks you up again.

In future there will be a train connection from Georgia to Turkey, but it is still under construction.

1d Travelling from Ankara (Turkey) to Istanbul (Turkey)

Travel from Ankara to Istanbul by direct high-speed-train. The journey time is 4:30 hours. The train ticket prices start from 75 TRY (9 EUR) in 2nd class and 105 TRY in 1st class (12 EUR).

On the train journey from Ankara to Istanbul you will travel by a "Yüksek Hızlı Tren" (YHT) high-speed-train with a top-speed of 250 km/h. There are at least six train connections daily. The travel distance is 530 kilometres. You have to be at the train platform at least 15 minutes before departure due to X-ray scan of your luggage.

The deparutre station is Ankara central railway station.

The arrival train stations are "Istanbul Pendik" and "Istanbul Söğütlüçeşme". You reach "Sirkeci" station by Marmaray suburban train from "Söğütlüçeşme" station. Frequent trains every 10 minutes. The journey time is 10 minutes for a ticket fare of less than 1 EUR.

"Istanbul Haydarpaşa" is under construction and maybe the YHT will start from there as well one day.

1e Travelling from Istanbul (Turkey) to Bucharest (Romania)

Travel from Istanbul to Bucharest by direct overnight train. The daily overnight train has a journey time of 20:30 hours. The train ticket fare is 49 EUR.

At off-season (October to May) you have to leave the overnight train in Dimitrovgrad (Bulgaria) at 04:30 in the morning and continue your journey via Gorna Oryahovitsa and Ruse to Bucharest.

The direct overnight train Istanbul to Bucharest departs at Istanbul Halkali station at 21:40 and arrives in Bucharest at 17:00. Buy your train ticket locally at the Istanbul Sirkeci train station (ticket window 4). This is not the departure station Istanbul Halkali.

The ticket price is 38 EUR plus a supplement of 11 EUR for a berth in a 4 person compartment.

In off-season buy a ticket Istanbul to Dimitrovgrad. And the other tickets locally at the stations where you have enough time, at least one hour in Dimitrovgrad, Gorna Oryahovitsa and Ruse. It is also possible to buy the ticket in the train from the conductor.

The departure station Istanbul Halkali is located 25 kilometres outside of the historic city centre. Buy your ticket for the overnight train at Istanbul Sirkeci railway station and get by Marmaray suburban train directly to Istanbul Halkali railway station. These suburban trains run every 15 minutes with a ticket fare of less than 2 EUR. The journey time is 35 minutes.

If you come by train from Ankara, the Marmaray suburban train station is "Söğütlüçeşme". From there you get directly to "Istanbul Sirkeci" (buy the overnight train ticket) and on to "Istanbul Halkali" (departure of the overnight train).

1f Travelling from Bucharest (Romania) to Budapest (Hungary)

Travel from Bucharest to Budapest by overnight train or by day train. The journey time is 15 hours. Train tickets start from 29 EUR.

The overnight train is comfortable and the recommended way of travel. It offers couchettes for 4 or 6 persons per compartment with ticket fares from 39 EUR. And sleeper compartments for one to three travellers with ticket fares from 55 EUR. The departure time in Bucharest is 17:45 and the arrival time in Budapest is 08:50.

Beside the overnight train there is a comfortable air-conditioned Intercity train which run at daytime. Ticket fares start from 29 EUR. The departure time in Bucharest is at 05:45 and the arrival time in Budapest is 19:50.

As third option there is the overnight train "Dacia Express". It offers sleeper compartments as well with shower and toilet. Its travel destination is Vienna (Austria), therefore the arrival time in Budapest is very early at 04:50. The departure time in Bucharest is 14:00. The ticket fares are the same like mentioned above.

All in all it is a recommended rail trip trough the beautiful scenery of the Carpathian mountains and into Transylvania.

To travel from Georgia to Ukraine, first travel to Batumi (Georgia). Walk from the railway station to the port. From there take the ferry to Chornomorsk (Ukraine). The journey time is about 48 hours. Ticket price starts from USD 110. In Chornomorsk which is located 20 kilometres south of Odessa, take a taxi, mini-bus or bus from the port to the railway station of Odessa.

2d Travelling from Odesa (Ukraine) to Kyiv (Ukraine)

To travel in Ukraine, you can easily buy train tickets for most long-distance trains online. Many tickets are available as e-tickets however some tickets have to be collected from a ticket office at a railway station. You can of course also buy all tickets locally at a station.

Most long-distance trains are overnight trains with different types of accommodation. On some routes between major cities there are also long-distance train which run during the day with seats only.

2e Travelling from Kyiv (Ukraine) to Budapest (Hungary)

Travel from Ukraine to Hungary by direct overnight train. It is the most comfortable way of travel between Kiev/Lviv and Budapest with a journey time of 22/15 hours.

You can also travel first with a ticket from Ukrainian railways to Chop. Then buy a ticket locally at the train station from Chop to Zahony. And from Zahony a ticket of Hungarian railways MAV to your travel destination. There are several daily trains crossing the border between Chop and Zahony.
