1c Travelling from Baku (Azerbaijan) to Tbilisi (Georgia)

Travel from Azerbaijan to Georgia by direct overnight train.

There is one daily overnight train from Baku (Azerbaijan) to Tbilisi (Georgia). The journey time is 12 hours. The train ticket fares start from 12 EUR.

The departure time in Baku is 20:40. The arrival time in Tbilisi is 09:00.

The overnight train offers the following service classes:
- 3rd class: "platskartny". A simple seat. Tickets from 12 EUR (23 AZN).
- 2nd class: "kupé", 4-berth sleeper compartments. Tickets from 17 EUR (33 AZN).
1st class: "spalny vagon", 2-berth sleeper compartments. Tickets from 28 EUR (57 AZN).

To travel from Odessa to Chisinau by train, there are direct connections once per day available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The journey time is about four hours. The ticket fares 1st class 281 UAH, 2nd class 268 UAH, 3rd class 255 UAH. Tickets are available directly at the train station or online via one of the booking links. Note: some booking websites use another spelling for the city names. Odessa = Odesa / Chisinau = Kishineu. The train number is 642Ш. Departure time in the evening - the best is to use one of the booking links where you find the exact schedule.

2b Travelling from Chisinau (Moldova) to Bucharest (Romania)

Travel from Moldova to Romania by overnight train on the route from Chisinau to Bucharest. The journey time is 13 hours. The train ticket price starts from 25 EUR. The train route runs via Ungheni (Moldova) and Iași (Romania).

The overnight train Chisinau to Bucharest offers the following service categories:
- 2nd class: 4-berth compartments. The ticket price 135 RON (28 EUR).
- 1st class: 2-berth compartments. The ticket price 290 RON (60 EUR).

The departure time in Chisinau is 17:00. The arrival time in Bucharest is 06:00.

Additionally there are local trains from Ungheni (Moldova) across the border to Iași (Romania). Regular train connections are available from Chisinau to to Ungheni.

2c Travelling from Bucharest (Romania) to Istanbul (Turkey)

Travel from Bucharest to Istanbul by direct overnight train Bosphorus Express. This daily overnight train has a journey time of 18:30 hours. Train tickets start from 52 EUR.

At off-season (October to May) you have to use connection trains to get to Dimitrovgrad (Bulgaria) where you can enter the overnight train. Travel from Bucharest via Ruse and Gorna Oryahovitsa to Dimitrovgrad (Bulgaria) where the night train departs at 22:40. You have enough time to change trains at each of these railway station.

The direct overnight train Bucharest to Istanbul departs at "Bucharest Gara de Nord" railway station at 11:00. The arrival time in Istanbul Halkali railway station is at 05:20 in the morning. After midnight you have to leave the train at the Turkish border with all your luggage and put your luggage through an X-ray machine.

The ticket price is 38 EUR plus a supplement of 14 EUR for a berth in a 4 person compartment. Buy the ticket at the railway station in Bucharest or on the website of Romania railways CFR. Select "Halkali" as destination.

The arrival station Istanbul Halkali is located 25 kilometres outside of the historic city centre. Get by Marmaray suburban train directly to Istanbul Sirkeci railway station (the former historic railway station) and on to "Söğütlüçeşme", the departure station for the high-speed-trains in direction of Ankara. These suburban trains run every 15 minutes with a ticket fare of less than 2 EUR. The journey time from the Istanbul Halkali station to the historic city centre is 35 minutes.

2d Travelling from Istanbul (Turkey) to Kars (Turkey)

2e Travelling from Kars (Turkey) to Batumi (Georgia)

Travel from Turkey to Georgia by train. For the border crossing you have to use a bus.

First travel by train to Erzurum or Kars. There is an overnight train available from Ankara with a journey time of 22 hours (Erzurum) or 27:30 hours (Kars). This overnight train called "Doğu Express" is comfortable and it is a very scenic journey. The train ticket fares start from 60 TRY (7 EUR) in a seat and from 80 TRY (9 EUR) in a 4-bed sleeper-wagon.

From Erzurum or Kars take a bus to the border at Sarp. The journey time is 5 hours. The bus ticket fare is about 10 EUR. Cross the border by foot. And continue by bus to Batumi.

Other options by bus are as follows:
the bus line from Trabzon (Turkey) to Batumi (Georgia). At least four connections daily for about EUR 15. From Istanbul (Turkey) to Batumi (Georgia) at least two connections daily for about EUR 25.
Trabzon (Turkey) is not connected to the railway network of Turkey. Therefore the easiest way is to take a bus directly from Istanbul or Ankara (Turkey) to Batumi (Georgia). Buy your bus ticket for Metro Turizm online.

In Batumi (Georgia) change to a train to continue to Tbilisi (Georgia).

Border crossing is currently: you leave the bus with the luggage before the border, cross the border by foot (easy) and after the border the bus picks you up again.

In future there will be a train connection from Turkey to Georgia. But it is still under construction.

To get from the railway station of Odessa to the port of Chornomorsk, take a taxi, mini-bus or bus. It is a journey of about 20 kilometres.

3b Travelling from Chornomorsk (Ukraine) to Batumi (Georgia)

To travel from Ukraine to Georgia, first go by train to Odessa (Ukraine). Take a taxi, mini-bus or bus to the Port of Chornomorsk, 20 kilometres in the south of Odessa. From Chornomorsk continue by ferry via the Black Sea to Batumi. The journey time is about 48 hours. Ticket price starts from USD 110. In Batumi walk to the railway station and continue.
