To travel by train from Helsinki in Finland to Bergen in Norway you have two main routes.
If you travel in the North of both countries, first travel from your departure station to Kemi (Finland) by train. There you change to the bus to Lulea (Sweden). Where you continue by train to Narvik (Norway) for destinations like the Lofoten, Bodö or even further north (bus).
If you travel more in the South, first travel by train from your departure station to Helsinki or Turku (Finland). There you change to the ferry to Stockholm (Sweden). From Stockholm you continue by train to Oslo (Norway). And on by train from Oslo to your destination in Norway (Bergen, Trondheim, ...).

1a Travelling from Helsinki (Finland) to Stockholm (Sweden)

To travel by ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm, book a direct overnight ferry. The daily departure time in Helsinki is in the late afternoon. The arrival in Stockholm in the morning. The journey time is about 17 hours. The ticket price starts from 85 Euro.

If you want to travel by a cheaper ferry or during the day (not overnight), you have to take a ferry route from Turku to Stockholm.

1b Travelling from Stockholm (Sweden) to Oslo (Norway)

To travel from Stockholm (Sweden) to Oslo (Norway) by train, you have direct train connections by Snabbtag/X2000 high-speed-trains. The journey time is about five hours.

1c Travelling from Oslo (Norway) to Bergen (Norway)

To travel from Oslo to Bergen by train, use one of the daily direct train connections (minimum three connections per day). Or the direct overnight train. The journey time is about seven hours.

We recommend you to book your train ticket early online in advance to get a saver price (Minipris). The Minipris ticket starts from about EUR 27 one-way per adult.

2b Travelling from Kemi (Finland) to Luleå (Sweden)

Travel from Kemi (Finland) to Luleå (Sweden) by a combination of train and bus. The journey time is three hours. The ticket fare is 26 EUR.

From Kemi railway station use a bus via Tornio to Haparanda. The ticket price is 6 EUR. Buy your ticket at the bus driver or on the website of Matkahuolto. The departure station is: Kemi railway station. The arrival station is: Haparanda-Tornio [NB. Finnish time].

In Haparanda change to the train to Luleå operated by "Norrtåg". The journey time is 1:50 hours. The train ticket fare is 200 SEK (20 EUR).

2c Travelling from Luleå (Sweden) to Narvik (Norway)

To travel from Sweden to Norway by train, there are three main routes available. In the south from Gothenburg (Sweden) in direction of Oslo (Norway). In the middle from Östersund (Sweden) to Trondheim (Norway). And in the north from Stockholm or Lulea (Sweden) via Kiruna and Abisko (Sweden) to Narvik (Norway).

The best route for you depends on your departure station in Sweden. Please use the following booking links to find the best route, schedules and ticket prices. If you book early, you will find attractive saver fares.

Both countries offer very good night train connections to travel long-distance. The railway network in the North of Norway is not connected between Narvik and Fauske/Bodø. You have to take the bus for this part.

2d Travelling from Narvik (Norway) to Bergen (Norway)

To travel in Norway by train with VY or another operator, please buy your train ticket online via one of the following booking links. There you find exact schedules and ticket prices. Advance fares (Minipris) can be considerably cheaper compared to full fare tickets.

For connections along the coast and in the far north you have to go with buses. For example from Bodö/Fauske to Narvik, to the Lofoten or from Narvik to North Cape. Narvik is connected by train from Sweden.
