DE Germany

There are ten Halligen in Germany. They all belong to the district of North Friesland (Nordfriesland). Seven of the ten Halligen are inhabited.

The Halligen rising only a few meters above sea level. They are small, non-protected marsh islands in front of the coast and can be inundated by storm surges. On the Halligen there are mounds (artificially raised hill), on which the houses stand.

Just looking at the Hamburger Hallig, it is no longer an island. It was connected in 1860 by a today navigable causeway to the mainland.
