Brief History

Namibia's rich rail transport history began in the late 19th century during German colonial rule. The first railway, Cape Cross, opened in 1895, while the significant Staatsbahn line from Swakopmund to Windhoek was completed in 1902. Other important lines included the Otavibahn and Lüderitzbahn. After World War I, South Africa integrated the network into its system, converting gauges and expanding the network. Namibia regained control in 1990 through TransNamib.
