Good to know:

When doing Eurail in Austria you don't have to worry about much. The main operator in Austria is ÖBB (state railways) who operate all main lines and international services. Services are frequent and reliable. Many lines run through scenic areas, such as Semmering railway (from Vienna to Graz/Klagenfurt), Arlberg railway (Innsbruck to Zurich) and Tauern railway (Salzburg to Klagenfurt). Railway lines not only connect the large cities such as Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Graz but also allow to go to beautiful rural areas such as Salzkammergut (Gmunden, Bad Ischl, Hallstatt, Bad Aussee) or Lake Neusiedl national park.

Private railway operators usually run on branch lines connecting larger cities with the countryside. Most of them do not accept Eurail but unless you have very specific destinations in mind you will not have to use these private railways anyway.
Private railways that do accept Eurail are GySEV, which run cross-border regional trains in the area between Vienna and Sopron and Gyor in Hungary, and Westbahn which operate Intercity trains between Vienna and Salzburg.

Timetables for all Austrian lines are available in our schedule planner or the Eurail app which include all trains and timings. You can also check on the national schedule planner.

The line from Salzburg to Innsbruck, which is the most important east-west connection in Austria, runs through Germany between Salzburg and Kufstein (travel time about 1h30). On the direct trains running on that route (for instance trains from Vienna to Zurich), Austrian domestic fares are valid which means that if you are travelling with a ticket valid for Austria only (One Country Pass) you do not have to pay extra.
