Good to know:

The Italian rail network is dense and trains on main and high speed lines are fast and reliable. Since the high speed trains have compulsory reservation we recommend to plan your route so that you can avoid these trains on shorter trips and use other trains instead to save on reservation costs. The most important line is the north-south high speed line from Turin via Milan – Bologna – Florence – Rome – Naples to Salerno where trains run up to 300 km/h. Other important lines run along the Mediterranean coasts in the east and west of the country and from Venice to Milan and Bologna. Additionally many local lines run to more rural areas.

Timetables of all services of Trenitalia are available in our schedule planner or the Interrail app which include all trains and timings. You can also check on the national schedule planner. For timings of private operators we recommend to look on the websites of these railways.

Besides the high speed trains of state railways Trenitalia there are also the trains of private operator Italo. Interrail is not valid on these trains! There are many other private railways running mostly on their own tracks. Interrail is valid on only a few of them, and you need to buy separate tickets for them. However, these are not very expensive.

There are many ferry connections starting from Italy. Ferries to Greece are included in your Interrail pass. Other connections run for example to Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, Bar, Durres and Barcelona.
