Brief History

In 1856, construction of the first railroad in Turkey began, and by 1922, more than 8,000 km of railroads had been built. At the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, there were about 3,660 km of railroad lines, which continued to expand. At the end of the 20th century, railroads became relevant again and several major projects were introduced, including the construction of high-speed lines and the planning of 5,000 km of new tracks. Turkish State Railways (TCDD) is planning a reorganization with the separation of passenger and freight traffic.
