Brief History

Australia's railways are an important component of Australia's transportation network and are of great importance to the Australian economy1. The first railroads in Australia were built by private companies based in the then colonies of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. This led to the problem of incompatible rail lines. Despite London's advice to adopt a uniform gauge standard, most colonies missed the point, making the issue a national problem for many years. Despite apparent progress, the problem has not been fully resolved to this day. Most of Australia's rail infrastructure is owned by the federation or individual states, with the exception of a few privately owned railroads. Most rail operators were once government agencies, but after privatization in the 1990s, private companies began to manage most of Australia's traffic.
