Through an approximately four-kilometer long greenbelt, the Planty, the world-famous old town of Krakow is shielded from motorist traffic. The old town is as an unique architectural ensemble since 1978 on the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritages. The centre of the old town is the large main market square (Rynek Główny), which was built in 1257 with an area of 40,000 sqm. It is one of the most beautiful market squares in Europe.
