Hello!

My son (18) and a group of friends will be interrailing next summer for 2-3 weeks. They plan to travel Amsterdam-Berlin-Prague-Budapest. After Budapest they would like to go to Croatia to stay for a few days before going home. To get home, they need to fly to Belfast or Dublin. So, they are thinking of travelling to Pula, because they could fly Pula-Dublin.

1. Would the interrail ticket cover Budapest-Pula? Can you advise on the best route options?
2. Could you recommend any alternative destinations to Pula (not necessarily in Croatia) for them to consider? They want to be somewhere relaxing (!), maybe near the sea, within reach of an airport from where they can fly to Ireland.

Thank you for your help :)

Hi and welcome to railcc!

1) Yes, the Interrail ticket would cover Budapest - Pula. There is no direct train, however during the summer months there will be a night train Budapest - Koper: [ux]https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/budapest-koper-g1246-1605/278[/ux] which will run again in 2018. In Divaca or Hrpelje-Kozina there will be a connecting service to Pula.
Alternatively it is possible to travel by night train to Rijeka: [ux]https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/budapest-rijeka-g1204-1605-481/418[/ux], then take a bus to Lupoglav (included in Interrail) and then finally go to Pula - however this will be slower than the option above.

2) Pula would be quite a good option if there are good flights back home. You can reach other spots in the vicinity (Premantura, or, a little further away, Rovinj) by public buses.
Other options would be to go from Budapest to Split and spend a few days there (however it is a quite popular area, especially in summer of course) or go via Belgrade to Montenegro - there could be cheap flights available from Podgorica airport.

The rest of the route is no problem and a "classic" Interrail route. :)

You can support our work by purchasing your official Interrail passes via our partner link: [ux]http://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] - thank you! :)

Thanks for your quick reply and good advice, Flo! I will pass it on to my son and encourage him to register with rail.cc himself. :)
