So we are taking a trip from Amsterdam to Berlin. It isn\'t direct though, and is as follows

We take our first train at 20:25, it arrives at its destination at 21:29
Second train 21:44 to 23:17
Our final train, which is an overnight one, is taken at 23:17 and it arrives at Berlin at 05:33

As you can see, the overnight trip starts after seven and arrives after 4, but we have two other trips before.
Would this combination count as one or two travel days?

Hi!

Unfortunately that wouldcount as two travel days.
If you want to use the 1900 rule you cant change trains on the day of departure.

And do you think we could find trains that depart and go straight to Berlin? Could we realistically avoid this situation?

Hi.
If you want to travel by direct train from Amsterdam to Berlin, you only have the day trains.
It is not possible by night train using the 1900h rule on this route.

Hi!

You are lucky: from July 19 there is a new overnight IC Bus service from Amsterdam to Hamburg: [ux]https://rail.cc/en/hamburg-amsterdam-ic-bus/n37[/ux]
Using this IC Bus, you can make use of the 1900 rule and then continue from Hamburg to Berlin (or get off at Hannover and travel to Beriln from there, which would be faster). You will only need a seat reservation for the bus. :)

Hi, I just checked and it seems like that bus makes a stop in Utrecht at 00:22. Wouldn\'t this affect the rule?

No, why should it? It is only important that you board the train (or bus in this case) after 1900 and that the train doesnt reach its terminus before 0400/you dont get off the train before 0400. ;)

Right, but I need to switch busses at Utrecht. It says "five minute walking" and then it seems we would take a train from Utrecht to Hamburg

The bus that is mentioned in the news article I linked above (bus 43423) runs directly from Amsterdam to Hamburg (with stops in Utrecht and Hannover); it is not necessary to change in Utrect. I could imagine that you have found another connection (the bus stops in Utrecht from 0025 to 0030) and that the bus probably isnt yet included in the database of the schedule planners (or that you have to select "direct connections only"). I will check.

Okay, thanks!! Yes it seems I found the wrong route. I will check again soon to see if the database is updated. By the way, can we make reservations for this online? I tried to "buy" a ticket just to see if we could, but there doesn\'t seem to be an option

No, online reservations are not possible; you could phone DB (German Railways) at +49 180 5 33 66 99, they can reserve and send you the reservations.

I just checked..the bus is in the database of [ux]http://plan.rail.cc/[/ux] already however if you just search for connections from Amsterdam Sloterdijk (and not from Amsterdam Centraal which is the "default").
