I've been around this forum, and seen that many people have said that it is quite difficult to get out of the cities and into the countryside. This could be a problem, since i was planning on camping most of the time and i cant really see a campsite being situated in inner city areas :D .

My question is: Is it really that difficult to get out of cities on smaller trainlines? For example, in visiting France, i would like to try and get somewhere near the Alps and camp. I looked at a map of major trainlines in the area and saw that it would be possible to go from Lyon to Annecy. Is it difficult?

Thanks for any info

Oli

Hi Oli ....

a good way it is to go back to the roots !!!! :P
I like the way you travel !! :)
I did it the same way very often ... because when you get out on a small station somewhere on the country side, you easily find a place in nature to sleep ... or maybe even an camping are (to have some showers!) :)

I often sleept on a meadow somewhere and sometimes I met in the morning a nice farmer who asked me about my travel, gave me some milk ... nice person often when you are fare away from everything !!! :)

also if you go to camping areas near the big cities or even inside of cities, there are a lot of people out of money living there and you have to pay attention that nothing get stolen !!! :( That's my experience .... ||

I wish you a lot of fun !!

Hi there,
I think that to get to Annecy from Lyon you must change at Aix les Bains. I went from Lyon to Chamonix on my last Interrail trip and I would heartily recommend it. It's about a 3 hour trip, with a change to narrow guage at St Gervais (no extra charge) There are lots of trains daily; plenty of great walks and scenery, including Mt Blanc and glaciers. All within easy reach of the town.

Enjoy your trip.

Cheers everyone for the info.

Peter, you say that you sometimes camped on meadows, grassy areas etc, but how do i know what is allowed to be slept on for a night and what is not alllowed to be slept on?

Usually you can use this rules:

If you see a house near, ask the people over there if you can camp where you wished to camp.

If there's no one near, make yourself comfortable, but don't stay very near open roads.

Don't leave litter.

Don't make fire, except on sandy grounds or in a fire place.

Don't camp more than 3 days on the same site, because it's bad for the grass...

@Miro ... this is the perfect answer. :)

and maybe something to ad:
- if you sleep on beaches, pay attention to thieves, especially near cities (by the way, it is normally not allowed officially to sleep on beaches).
- in the Scandinavian countries it is officially allowed to sleep somewhere in nature, when it is not a nature reservation or private ground and you do not stay longer than one night at the same place.
