Hey Pete,
This summer, I will be traveling to the Caucasus for a project for University, and from there (around Tbilisi, Georgia), I'm planning to go Japan, by train of course!
In my mind, the simplest would be to go from Tbilisi to Baku, and then from Baku to Moscow (and of course afterwards the trans-siberian to Vladivostok, then ferry).
2), apparently it's not possible for an indefinite period of time because the border is, or was closed. :|
Do you know if that still applies and/or for how long? If so, what would you advise me to do? (There's a possibility to take a ferry to Russia, to go back to Sofia to there take the train to Moscow, or others?)
I hope this is the right place for me to write this?
Thanks for the information in any case! :D Jean-Louis

Hi Jean-Louis!

As far as I know, the border is open and you could use the night train.
This is also the information provided by German Foreign Office: www.auswaertiges-amt.de/sid_A64C118E3CFE07C34812A63F15A94E48/DE/Laenderinformationen/00-SiHi/AserbaidschanSicherheit.html?nn=339014#doc338958bodyText3

Would be great to hear from your experiences on your trip! :)

Dear Flo,

Thank you so much, this is very reassuring!

I'll let you know how the border passing (and the rest if anyone is interested of course) was.

Have a nice day,

Jean-Louis

Now that I had a closer look I remember that I read about a trip on the Moscow - Baku train last year and there was no mentioning of any troubles so I'd assume that you can again use the border crossing. :)

If you want, you can share parts of your trip on the blog http://rail.cc/blog/ as well.

Hello !
I think do this route (Moscow-Baku-Tbilissi only by train ) for a future travel so I am curious to get feedback from your experience !, but if you have good plans for the azerbaidjan visa (for the french traveller I am , I need it ) , it's also warm welcome (I think also stop in Russia between Moscow and Baku, like Vladikavkaz and Derbent if possible, I know how to get invitation for Russia via travel agency in Russia but not sure stops in Caucasus are ok with a simple visa, or if I have to get a special invitation , if you know about this also , dont hesitate to share informations !

Hi Mika!

I dont know about special visa rules for visiting the Caucasus region of Russia - when you apply for your visa you have to state your planned route anyway, so if there would be troubles you would probably know about it before you leave.
I would recommend to directly ask either at the Russian consulate or at a visa agency. You could also contact JLBerthoud directly via private mail to ask him for his experiences.
Of course it would be also very good to hear from your own experiences after your trip. :)
