Hello everybody! I would appreciate if you could answer my questions.
I’m planning my first interrail with some friends and our first journey is supposed to be Milan - Zagreb. There’s Euronight trains available for that, are they included in the interrail pass?
There’s also a second catch. The journey isn’t direct, which means we will have to stop along the way in Austria, at 03:07 am. Then, we hop on another euronight train at 04:15, arriving at Zagreb at 08:35. Supposedly, the 7pm rule applies when you leave after 7pm and arrive at the final destination after 4am of the next day, counting only the day of arrival. Do you think it would apply on this case? Or does this trip count as 2 days of train?
Thank you so much!

Hi and welcome.

Using a schedule planer like [ux]https://plan.rail.cc[/ux] , you will find the overnight connection first by night train Milan to Villach, which is this one: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/milan-vienna-nj-235/95 - seat from Euro 14, couchettes and sleepers even more expensive.
Then from Villach by another night train to Zagreb: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/munich-zagreb-en-50463/151 - seat Euro 5.
So you have a not very comfortable night, you have to change in the middle of the night, you pay at least 19 Euro (14+5) for "seat only" and the rule for night trains officially does not apply.

There are of course different routes available. My favourite one would be like that:

From Milan to Gorizia. All by regional trains, free of extra reservations. Of course also possible using Italian high-speed-trains with a reservation of Euro 10: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/italy/it

Example (not valid every day):
Milano Centrale dep 0725
Verona Porta Nuova arr 0915

Verona Porta Nuova dep 0935
Venezia Mestre arr 1141

Venezia Mestre dep 1217
Gorizia Centrale arr 1418

There you walk (or use the bus) to the Slovenian part pf the city "Nova Gorica". Read here for details: [ux]https://rail.cc/blog/italy-slovenia-train/[/ux]

From Nova Gorica continue either to Ljubljana or Bled for an overnight stop. Read also here: [ux]https://rail.cc/blog/travel-lake-bled-train/[/ux]

But you could even catch a regional train in Nova Gorica at 15:55 and arrive with some changes at 22:41 in Zagreb. Free at no extra reservations with Interrail.

And finally, if you like the free information on rail.cc , please support them with the purchase of your Interrail pass via our partner link at no extra costs for you: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you! :)

Pete :)
