I don't think that the interrail ticket is valid for the ferries between the greek islands. There are thousand islands to visit, and many routes that might interest you. For people that are not greek the port of Peiraias [the biggest greek port] is most suitable due to easy access. You can choose between ferries [slower but cheaper] and catamarans [faster and more expensive].
Companies that you may use are minoan, blue star ferries and anek. Enjoy your stay!

Hello,
The interrail pass is only between Ancona (or Bari) to Patra... no discount is offered at any other route. To give you an idea, I took the ferry from Piraeus (accessible by subway from Athens) to Santorini and it was around 35 euros for 5 hours. Check where you'd like to go, and then present you at a ferry travel agency. There are a couple of them even in Athens, where you can buy tickets in advance.
I suggest you to go buy you ticket as soon as you know where and when you want to go, I lost a day like that... we're sometimes out of time! (Another tip, 2 days in Athens is quite the maximum you can take to see everything... i needed only one)

Some extra information for people that want to visit the greek islands.

1. The tickets for the islands have a considerable increase [for many reasons, if someone wants we may talk about it] this summer.

2. You get a considerable discount [up to 30%] in fares if you're a student. Please note that NOT all student identity cards are accepted in Greece [due to the fact that the agents can't possibly know everything], and also that the agents ask for your student identity/pass in order to give you the discount.

See you!

Is it necessary to book ahead for the ferries connecting the Greek islands? It would be good to be able to island hop as and when we pleased.

for some islands and for some specific dates its necessary to book and probably you won't find a ticket...
but for some other routes you will be fine...
but you can always visit Ionian islands or some small Aegean island without booking and i suggest these islands ;)

also there is NO discount for students or so during July - August..

During summer ferries to these islands are frequent.
If there is a need to book thats only for August specially from 1st to 15th.. so i don't think you have to book for the period you are talking about.
When you arrive to Piraeus port you can buy your ticket without problem.
Just ask if there is a high speed and a normal ferry so that you can choose the cheap one.

Hey, do you know if there's any frequent ferry going from Turkey (f.ex. Izmir or Antalya) to Greece (f.ex. Athens) this summer?
