Hi all,
Hoping to travel by ferry from Athens to Venice during the summer, around the 4th of July roughly. Just wondering if the ferry is the most efficient option? Also, does the interrail pass cover the ferry or will I have to pay extra? Finally, does anyone know the approximate duration of the journey or if there are different speed ferries?

Hi Mark!
There are no ferries from Athens to Italy, you would have to go to Patras first.
From Patras, Anek Lines/Superfast Ferries operate twice weekly to Venice, leaving Patras at 2359 on Thu and Sun, arriving Venice at 0700 on Sat and Tue.
Minoan Lines operate a ferry from Patras to Trieste, leaving at 2359 on Mon and Thu, arriving at 0600 on Wed and Sat.
You travel for free with Interrail on both Anek/Superfast and Minoan. The free trip is for a deck passage, which means you take your sleeping bag with you and sleep somewhere on deck. Additional fuel/port taxes as well as a seasonal surcharge are to be paid. If you want you can also upgrade to a pullman seat or cabin.

Thanks a million for the information, I appreciate it! Ah that's great that the interrail pass covers it. However, do you have an idea, roughly, how much the fuel/port taxes/seasonal surcharge would amount to?

In July, extra costs will be around 30-40€.
