How to travel in Slovenia by train: information, connections, blog and travel reports. Help in our forum to buy train tickets.
Tickets are available online from Austrian Railways (ÖBB), however they have to be collected at a station in Austria (ticket machine or ticket desk) before the journey. You can of course also buy tickets locally at a station in Slovenia.
There are two main border crossings with several direct trains: From Ljubljana via Maribor to Graz and Vienna and from Ljubljana via Bled to Villach, from where you can go to either Vienna or Salzburg and Innsbruck.

Advance fare tickets (Sparpreis Europa) offer very attractive fares and are available for many routes from Slovenia through Austria to Germany.
If you need to start your travel from cities in Slovenia where no ticket is available from online, buy your online ticket from the first possible station and get the ticket for the remaining part in Slovenia locally. Ensure to plan with enough time for changing trains to cope for possible delays!
If you want to travel from Slovenia to Croatia by train, buy your ticket locally at a train station in Slovenia. There are several discounted tickets available, for instance the Zagreb Spezial from Ljubljana to Zagreb: single 9€, return 18€. Tickets are not available online, only at stations.
There are several railway lines between Slovenia and Croatia, the most important being the main line from Ljubljana to Zagreb via the Dobova/Savski Marof border crossing. Here you will find several international express trains. Other major international lines run from Ljubljana to Rijeka and from Ljubljana to Pula.
If you are travelling from Slovenia to Hungary by train, buy your ticket locally at a station in Slovenia. The advance fare offer "Budapest Spezial" for trips from Ljubljana to Budapest is available from 9€. Tickets are not available online.
You can buy online tickets from Hungarian Railways MAV, however these have to be collected from a ticket machine at a station in Hungary!
The only border crossing between the two countries is at Hodos where the direct train from Ljubljana to Budapest runs.
There are no direct trains between Slovenia and Italy. Border crossing is possible between Sezana/Villa Opicina and Nova Gorica/Gorizia. It is quite easy with alternative modes of transport. Please read therefore our detailed blog.
