I see that it is no longer possible to do a search at db.de for Milan to Tirano trains.. I went to trenord.it and the service is like they used to be, one departure every two hours. Any information regarding this? Private railways elsewhere are in the common railway timetable, in Germany at least..

Hi,

well, each company has to provide their schedules to the online travel planners. Not many railways offer travel planners for the whole of Europe, DB and ÖBB do so and use HAFAS software - and as said before this programme can only offer those schedules for which data has been provided.
Trenord obviously has decided not to send data (yet), so you have to look for schedules on their website. :|

Regarding InterRail/EuRail on Trenord, there are no official news at the moment but we were told that TreNord should be officially accepting IR/ER soon. Meanwhile staff should accept passes anyway, which we got confirmed by several travellers in the recent past. :)

On the subject of Trenord and Interrail, I emailed Trenord to ask, and they said no (Italian email exchange below).

----------

Gentile Cliente,
siamo spiacenti d'informarLa che i titoli di viaggio da Lei descritti non sono validi sui treni Trenord.
Distinti saluti.

Hi!

Thanks for the input. :)

Several reports around the forum and that we got by mail suggest that IR is valid - at least on the lines former operated by Trenitalia (such as Milano - Chiasso or Milano - Tirano which are quite important for rail pass travellers).
Anyway, we also contacted Trenord several times with different replies, the last reply said that IR was not valid though. However, we also are in contact with Eurail Group which told us that IR is valid.

I have been travelling from Milano to Tirano in February 2011 and from Milano to Chiasso in December 2013 with InterRail and on both occasions the ticket was accepted without any issues. :)

Aha. So straight from the horse's mouth is not to be relied on here!
Thanks for the clarification. If I get any more info I'll post it here.
It's those very lines that I'm looking at for this summer. Is there a source of info on which lines were formerly Trenitalia?
Thanks again.

I am not quite sure about the situation of the Brescia - Iseo line; all other lines are former Trenitalia lines.

Brescia-Is was an independent line-thus NOT FS/TrenIt, and merged on behalf of the regione with the then FNM to become regione-wide TreNord. IR will not be accepted thus.

Just following this up, I successfully travelled with an Interrail pass from Chiasso-Como-Monza-Tirano on Trenord trains last week (June 2014). None of the Trenord staff raised an eyebrow.
As for the trains themselves, I've travelled on better... At least the windows opened on the Tirano train, while some of the others had what you might call theoretical air conditioning, graffiti half way up the windows and square wheels.
Pretty scenic run alongside the lake section Lecco-Colico.
