In spring 2008, we took the Centovalli railway (Centovallina) from Locarno via Camedo (border Switzerland/Italy) to Domodossola (and back).
Locarno is located at an altitude of about 200 m above sea level. The train is going up to 552 m (border) and then further to 836 m (highest railway station is Santa Maria Maggiore). Then back to a height of 267 m (Domodossola).
The total route length is approximately 52 km, which are divided as follows:
Locarno to the border = about 20 km
From the border to Domodossola = about 32 km
Along the route there are 83 bridges and viaducts (47 in Switzerland and 36 in Italy) and 34 tunnels.
The journey takes about 1:45 h.
This scenic drive is highly recommended - it is a special experience.
