According to Interrail, you get one free outbound journey from your own country to the border. So if I start in Stockholm, to go to Amsterdam I\'ll need to take a direct train to Hamburg, and then change to Amsterdam from there. The whole journey is around 16h. Does the outbound journey count towards the amount of travel days you are allocated? Let\'s say I take the train from Stockholm 11 pm the day before, arrive at Hamburg in the morning the day after, and then take the train, does that mean that I\'ll be using 2 days? Or will the journey from Hamburg to Amsterdam be the only one that will be counted towards my travel days?
A somewhat related question, do the travel days count when you check in to the train, or when you check out? If I, for example, take a train at 6pm the day before, and arrive around 3 am the day after, does that mean that two days will be used or only one?

Hi and welcome to railcc!
- There is no direct train from Stockholm to Hamburg. Starting from Stockholm at 11pm I assume you want to travel with the night train to Malmö: [ux]https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/stockholm-malmoe-nt-1/139[/ux]
From Malmö you would have to change to a Öresundtrain across the Öresund to Copenhagen, from where you can continue to Hamburg. From Hamburg you would continue to Amsterdam, again at least one change of trains is required.
- If you have a Flexi Interrail pass (eg 5 travel days in 15 days), you need to use a travel day for inbound and outbound journey. However, you can also make use of the 19:00 rule for night trains, so if you start from Stockholm with the night train you do not have to use a travel day on your day of departure. Only for the following day, where you continue from Malmö to Amsterdam, a travel day is needed.
- A travel day starts at 00:00 and lasts until 23:59; you can travel with as many trains and make as many changes as you like during this time. As mentioned above, if you take a direct night train after 19:00 on the day before you can travel with that night train, needing only one travel day (the day of arrival).

Thank you for your help. So during the travel day, you can take as many trains as you want, as long as you board them during the timeframe? So if you board the train before the time frame is up (excluding the 7pm rule), it won\'t count as an extra day? Like if you board your train 6pm the train before and arrive the day after, will two days be used or only the day you actually board the train?

No - you have to finish your trip within the timeframe as well. Otherwise you would need another travel day.
You want to travel on July 23 (example): you mark July 23 as a travel day in your Interrail pass, and can travel with as many trains you like on that day (July 23) between 00:00 and 23:59.
If you board your first train at 08:00 you can still travel until 23:59 on that day. If you want to travel on the following day as well (July 24) you have to use a second travel day. Exception: You board your first train after 19:00, which has to be a direct night train, and make no changes of trains on July 23; then you only have to mark July 24 as a travel day (the 19:00 rule for night trains).
