Hello

My parents who are very inexperienced travellers who won\'t fly, are hoping to visit Bergen this summer from the UK. Please can someone help me plan the best and most easy route for them?
Thanks

Hi and welcome to railcc!

From Hoek van Holland your parents will have to go via Hamburg to Hirtshals; there are several different options of how to get to Hamburg; most likely via Rotterdam - Utrecht - Arnhem - Duisburg/Düsseldorf- Bremen.
From Hamburg the direct route would take them via Flensburg - Fredericia - Aarhus - Aalborg.

Through tickets from Rotterdam to Hirtshals are available at [ux]https://rail.shop/omio/[/ux]
However, since the journey will take the whole day and likely have very bad connections with both ferries I would recommend to break the journey half way; for instance in Hamburg.
You can buy tickets to/from Hamburg at the above link or at [ux]https://rail.shop/nsinternational/[/ux] or [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux]

The last part of the journey from Hjorring to Hirtshals is operated by private railway [ux]https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-company/nordjyske-jernbane/111[/ux] and it can be the case that you wont get a ticket through to Hirtshals. In that case buy to Hjorring only and buy the remaining ticket locally.
Similary, the Hoek van Holland - Rotterdam train line is currently being transformed to be part of the RET Rotterdam metro network and through rail tickets from Hoek to Germany/Denmark are not available anymore.
However, you can simply buy this ticket locally or buy a "Any Dutch Station" ticket for Dutchflyer ferry service as described in the blog: [ux]https://rail.cc/blog/rail-sail-london-amsterdam-train-ferry/[/ux]

From Hirtshals there is a direct ferry available which would be the most convenient option: [ux]https://rail.shop/fjordline[/ux]

An alternative option would be to travel by train from Hamburg via Copenhagen - Malmö - Gothenburg - Oslo to Bergen; however this probably would take even longer (and require another overnight stop and/or a night train from Oslo to Bergen).
