The Meininger Hamburg City Center is a hostel or hotel in Altona, about 8 minutes walk from the station. A relatively cheap place to stay for example in a dorm room. There are also great breakfasts! The reception is open 24 hours and you can check in from 15:00h (check out by 10:00h). There are free lockers available for luggage, washer and dryer. Meanwhile, there is probably also a communal kitchen for guests. Otherwise, there is also a lobby bar and several computers for Internet access (additional fee). Meininger City Center hotel is also available in dozens of other cities (Berlin, London, Cologne, Vienna, ...).

The Ibis Hotel Hamburg St. Pauli Messe is located near the Reeperbahn. Functional and clean. Double rooms can be booked cheap. I would definitely recommend it.

Steigenberger InterCity Hotels are ideal for rail travellers, as they are situated directly at or very close to the railway station. The InterCityHotel Hamburg is located directly at the main station (ICE high speed train connection). It is in the city centre. In InterCityHotels the hotel card is also the ticket for public transport. The InterCityHotel Hamburg has 155 rooms. Guests can check in at Intercity Hamburg from 14:00h and must leave the room on departure at 12:00h. I find it very pleasant.

Ibis budget = former Etap. 148 rooms. We had a room with queen size bed. Price per person: from 47 EUR Surcharge for the second person: 10 EUR The rooms have air conditioning and very good sound insulation. Located on a main road, but with the windows closed you can hear absolutely no noise from outside, really. This budget ibis hotel has in my eyes three advantages: - Good location (often ibis budget hotels are located just at motorways and train travelers simply can not reach them); with the regional train RB 10 you can reach it within 7 minutes + approx 300 meters walk to the hotel. You can also use the S1 (direction Airport / Poppenbüttel) to the station "Wandsbeker Chaussee". The walk is a bit longer, but the S-Bahn runs every 10 minutes (the RB only every 30 minutes). And on the way to the hotel you have several shops and restaurants. - Not far away there are several bakeries offering breakfast menus and a restaurant with also inexpensive breakfast - In the area several dining options are available (a lot of them in the same building, square)

The A&O Hamburg Hammer Kirche is a hostel a bit outside of the city centre, but easy to reach by subway. Leave subway station (U3) at "Hammer Kirche" to the top, turn left and follow the street down to the traffic lights. I stayed in a four-bed-dorm. A little bit old but clean. Beside the hostel there is a supermarket, open until 21:00h. We got the impression that the room cleaners have stolen some of the cosmetics of the girls in the room. Also only the lower beds were made not the one in the top out of laziness probably. If you want to meet other travellers, don't stay in this hostel. If you need a quiet place to sleep, it is okay for one or two nights. Friendly staff.
