From Budapest to Sofia there are only these two possible connections, both require overnight travel:

I would recommend to travel via Belgrade; buy your ticket Budapest - Belgrade in Budapest at the station (one way 15€, return 26€) and the ticket Belgrade - Sofia in Belgrade at the station (will be about 20-25€ one way).
