Im from Hamburg, Germany and im thinking about buying an Interrail global Pass with 5 travel days for a ~10 day hiking journey in Switzerland. Am I allowed to use 2 of the travel days to take trains from Hamburg to e.g. Interlaken and back? Since I would travel through almost all of my home country to leave it, I’m wondering if that’s allowed. (Prices for direct connections that are not too long from Hamburg to Interlaken cost around 150€, so the 200€ pass should make sense if I also travel around Switzerland a bit right?)

Hi and welcome. :)

You have only ONE travel day to leave (outbound) your country of residence and ONE to come back (inbound). It is NOT possible to use two travel days to leave Germany in direction of Switzerland.

An option to split your travels or save money could be to travel for example by outbound day from Hamburg to Prague/Vienna/Salzburg, ... and from there with a second of your travel days to Switzerland.
Or did you already checked the prices for a night train from Hamburg to Basel/Salzburg? Have a look here (with Interrail): https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/hamburg-zurich-nj-401/501 - also check for normal saver fares on [ux]https://rail.shop/omio[/ux]
Third option could be by Flixtrain night train from Hamburg to Lörrach which is just at the Swiss border to Basel. There you get saver fares from Euro 19,99. Check here: [ux]https://rail.shop/flixtrain[/ux]

All in all is Interrail a very nice option for Switzerland. A lot is included. You can even travel the route for Glacier and Bernina Express. Either in these special trains directly with a reservation fee https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/switzerland/ch or by free (with Interrail) local trains: same route, good trains and you can sometimes even open the windows.

What date do you plan to travel?

Pete :)

Thanks for your answer!
Sounds like it should be possible then, I can travel outbound from Hamburg in 1 travel day (starting early in the morning in Hamburg to arrive around noon in Switzerland). And the same for the way back on the last travel day.
I’m planning to do this trip in September.
