Beer Garden in Erfurt - Thüringer Grillhütte

Biergarten in Erfurt - Thüringer Grillhütte

Small beer garden at the Cathedral Square, just to the right of the cathedral steps, below the Severi church. Not immediately visible in the variety of cafes and restaurants surrounding the Cathedral Square. A "Classic" beer garden with gravel, wooden tables and benches and a large, shady chestnut. However, it is not common like in Munich that you can bring your own food. For hungry guests, there is "Thuringian Bratwurst". The beer garden is always open until 19:00h when the weather is nice. The prices are moderate. Thuringian Bratwurst with bread roll = 2 EUR The small shandy (mix of lemonade and beer) is EUR 2, a great (0,5l) shandy 3 EUR.

Restaurant Grundmühle

Ausflugslokal Grundmühle

Directly from Erfurt city center you can start of the hike. Of course you can shorten the distance by using the bus to the outskirts and then the Orphalgrund Trail (6 km). 25 years ago the Grundmühle (exists since more than 300 years) was a real find. Today it is a popular venue for hikers and cyclists.

Restaurant Waldhaus

Ausflugslokal Waldhaus

If you want to escape the city bustle, have a walk through the "Steiger" (forest on the outskirts of Erfurt) with destination "Waldhaus". Nice in the summer: there is a large beer garden. Beautiful on sunny spring, autumn and winter days: the Italian restaurant has a winter garden. For the way back to the city, you can use the bus, if you do not want to walk.

Predigerhof Erfurt

In Erfurt there are more than 20 small and large parks. Not all are of interest for non-residents. But I would recommend the Predigerhof, because it is for me a place of tranquility in the middle of the city bustle. The Predigerhof is a cemetery and belongs to the Predigerkirche. It is among the Neuen Mühle (on the Schlösserbrücke) and located just beside the Predigerkirche. Both the Neuen Mühle (including the resident cafes) and the Predigerhof you can reach from the "Schlösserstraße". The main entrance to the Predigerkirche can be reached by the Paulstraße/Predigerstraße/Meister-Eckehart-Straße. However, there is also a hidden access to the Predigerhof but I think that's probably something for local knowledge. Four benches in the courtyard are now not sooo much, but otherwise it wouldn't be as quiet. I think you can spend here on warm summer days a relaxing time.

Erfurt Zoo

Zoo Erfurt

How to get there you reach the zoo from the city center (Anger) by tram line number 5 (from "Anger" to the last stop "Zoopark"). Opening times from 1 April to 31 October daily from: 09.00 to 18.00 h (last entry and offices close: 17.30 h) from 1 November to 31 March daily from: 10.00 to 16.00 h (last entry and offices close: 15.30 h) Admission As an adult, you pay 7 EUR. There is also an evening ticket (from one hour before closing). This will cost 4.50 EUR. + + + My experience / My Opinion + + + In the past I didn't realy liked the zoo in Erfurt. But I have to say: since some years it is getting pretty good. Some enclosures are accessible. Well done! There is now - not far from the main entrance - a picnic area. From the restaurant "Weinberghaus" (which unfortunately is only accessible from the zoo area, not from outside), you have a fantastic view over the city. I can't judge the food because I stayed there only for short time, but it looked good. The espresso I can't recommend!against ...

Park walk in Erfurt - four parks at once

Parkspaziergang in Erfurt - vier Parks am Stück

I would like to recommend a combination of several parks. If you have the time, take the walk up to Hochheim, the turning point of my trip. From Erfurt Central Train Station to Hochheim it is 3.5 km. The first of the parks starts just behind the station. You have to pass through the station underpass and turn right behind the right. We arrive at the PARKANLAGE AM LÖBERWALLGRABEN. I personally use the park frequently, when I get out of town on a bicycle and go home. The path leads along the flood ditch. (Explanation: The flood ditch with a length of 5400 meters was built 1890-1898 to protect against flooding.) You will see the monument Richard Breslau but it is not very representative. There is further to the left there is the "Pension am Park". It is in an Art Nouveau style villa reopened in December 2006. The building looks inviting. I once looked on the internet. There are various rooms, all of which are illustrated with good photographs. You can stay there overnight for 20-30 EUR per person plus breakfast: EUR 5. Next a playground. Just behind is the St. Thomas Church (Thomaskirche). It is a Protestant church, which was inaugurated 1902. A few more steps and I discover a bronze figure. A woman is shown. A few steps further is a wooden cross by the wayside. Inscription: "He had no chance," added the name and data. What does it mean? I have searched the Internet and found out that in 2005 a terrible accident occurred here. At the corner of Puschkinstraße / Charlottenstraße is a hostel. Here you can stay from 13 EUR. Now you underpass the railway. From here there are signs in direction of Hochheim: only 2.8 km left. [Google translator from here - will correct it soon] Next we have the right hand a nostalgic bridge with a beautiful wrought-iron railings. It is the William Bridge. "Built in 1898 renovated in 2002," I can read in the attached table there. Another piece is a nice way to be a seeing tree (a beech?) And a small playground. Soon after, a pergola with benches, a large colorful, symmetrical planted flower bed in front. The Pförtchenbrücke is already in sight. We go further and are now in the PARK SYSTEM TO THE PFÖRTCHENBRÜCKE. I personally use this park, when I go running. The Pförtchenbrücke itself is my feeling after a very beautiful bridge. There is an arched bridge made of brick. Built in 1897 and with such wonderful historical lanterns - I love them! Just beyond the left-hand side is a monument Pförtchenbrücke Christian Reichart. A representative monument, I think. Christian Reichart was a famous citizen of our city. He was the founder of modern commercial horticulture in Erfurt. He studied at Erfurt, then dealt with agriculture, horticulture and worked as a co-author with a herb book. He lived in better conditions, had large estates. Thus he had the opportunity to perform experiments on land use and increasing yields. His merit, it was that the vegetables (especially cauliflower) was part of the Erfurt horticulture. Reichart also encouraged the development of seed breeding and gardening tools. The trail continues along the watercourse. I like that. Not always is the water, but again, you cross it. The next bridge is the Frederick Bridge (also built in 1897). Beyond the bridge we find ourselves at the ESPACH PROMENADEN Actually, this is not really a park but rather an avenue. This piece is one of my personal jogging if I'm out and about in running shoes. Currently this is where a cafe (where formerly stood the Espachbad). The newly designed site also features a children's playground with a great wooden ship, the "Espachschiff" is. Like it a lot. We continue along the avenue and come back on the road, which here bears the street name of Alfred Hess Street. There is also the Hohenzollern Bridge. On the other side of the road, we are already in LUIS PARK / FOUNTAIN PARK THREE Earlier this park was also the memorial of Louise, but that has been damaged several years ago. Something incredible! After just a few meters, presents itself to us on the lawn right, a stone figure - a reclining woman. The morning sun is shining at the time of our visit and take in the morning and straight to the figure. Thus, it is not only "The lying woman", but "The woman basking in the sun" or something ... Certainly looks beautiful in the sun. Among other weather conditions likely to be white, right now it makes her something. Here the park (some) I also use from time to time, when I go running. The park is still narrow, but is now getting a bit wider. The road forks. Right, a small wooden bridge. If you were to cross it, then you would be in the Dendrological garden. Then we do the walk today. Excluding the unused bridge, the road goes straight on, because to get to the weir at Dreienbrunnenbad. Dreienbrunnenbad the way, is still in operation. Who has the time and inclination can, on hot days here only once a refreshing dip to cool off. The name of the bath and the (second) name of the park stem from three sources, also located in the park, only a few steps behind the weir in the direction of Hochheim. The three sources are fed by groundwater and therefore does not dry up even during drought. The sources salty water bubbles, each with varying salinity. Some people come here and Erfurt, a water bottle filled full. Well tried, I have it already, but so tasty I do not find it now that I immediately wanted to fill the bottle. Who now do your feet hurt a bit, which should reverse. All others have the opportunity to run another 1.2 miles and then come to the above-mentioned Hochheim.

Erfurt city park

Stadtpark Erfurt

Small park located directly behind the train station (southern direction). If you are waiting for a train, spent the time here. Much nicer than inside of the railway station itself. You have to pass through the station underpass and cross the traffic light at the Schillerstraße. Then you can take already the wide staircase up to the city park (Stadtpark).
