We are flying into Budapest in July and want to take the day train to Ljubljana the next day. It seems I cannot buy these train tickets online. Is it easy enough to buy them the evening before at the station or even day of departure at the station? Is there any way the train will be full? We like to be organized in advance - thanks!

Hi.
It depends on the route you travel. All options are here:
https://rail.cc/en/train/budapest-to-ljubljana

If you want to book online in advance, you have the following options.

There is one daily direct train from Budapest to Ljubljana, but you can not book it online. You can only book Budapest-Zagreb (EUR 29) via rail.shop/mav - it won't be a problem to buy the ticket for this direct train as well at the day of departure in Budapest.

Booking online the full trip is possible in two steps and travelling via Vienna (Austria):
Budapest - Vienna at rail.shop/mav for EUR 13. You book online and pick up the ticket in Budapest Keleti station where you will start. A ticket machine is right hand of the main entrance - it is very easy as you only have to fill in the code you get online.
Vienna - Ljubljana at rail.shop/oebb - as earlier you book, as cheaper the prices is. Available from EUR 29. Book online and print it out at home.

Thanks Peter,
We booked the tickets from Vienna to Ljubljana - very easy!
However when it comes to the tickets from Budapest to Vienna, even following your instructions, we still cannot book the tickets! Is it possibly just too far before the date of travel to be able to do it now?

Hi.
Maybe this is a reason - if you tell me your travel date, I can give you an answer. :)

Pre-booking time is two months. So you still have to wait a little bit.
Price is EUR 13 in 2nd class direct train.

Thanks so much. Although for Budapest to Vienna, even if I put in next week's dates, i still can't get to the ticketing page. Seems like I'm following the directions but can never get to the tickets and fares. Strange...

At first sight it looks a bit confusing, the booking system - that's right.

1 go to [ux]https://rail.shop/mav[/ux]
2 fill in from: BUDAPEST*
3 fill in to: WIEN*
4 select the date
5 reduction: full fare
6 press the orange buttontimetable
# next page
7 keep everything as it is
8 fill in date of birth: YYYY.MM.DD
9 press the orange button tickets and prices
# next page
10 in the middle of the page you will see a blue bar with white letters: 13.00 euro - further information
11 press the little orange icon between 13.00 euro and further information
12 a light blue box opens bellow the blue bar
13 press the orange icon left beside open
14 the list of the trains opens
15 select the train you want to use
16 press the orange button on the top ticket to the cart
# next page
17 make the payment
18 here is a detailed documentation: jegyvasarlas.mav-start.hu/eTicketV2/EN/hogyan_vasarolhatok.html

Peter,

You were incredibly helpful to the original poster. I was hoping you could provide some details about the direct train from Budapest to Ljubljana as I was hoping to ride it later this year.

Phil, how was your experience booking your rout online? What is the total travel time for your rout?

Hi.
There is one daily direct train, leaving Budapest at 13:23h. Arrival time in Ljubljana is 21:25 h.
Book your ticket (Ljubljana Special) directly at Hungarian national railways MAV: [ux]https://rail.shop/mav[/ux]
Buy it online. And pick it up at the railways station. You get a 10-digit code which you have to put into a ticket machine. At Budapest-Keleti station (the departure station of this train), you can find several of these ticket machines on the right hand coming from the main entrance in direction of the tracks.

Have a nice trip, Peter :)

Hello, I was hoping to get a night train from Budapest to Ljubljana around the end of July. All the online websites are rather confusing I was wondering if you know if there is a direct train?

Hi!

This is the only direct train, running on Mondays and Thursdays only: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/budapest-koper-g1246-rg1605/278
You would have to get a ticket locally at a train station or at the MAV website at [ux]https://rail.shop/mav[/ux]
Special fare tickets start from 39€.

hi, I was hoping to get the night train from Budapest to Ljubljana in the end of July aswell. As I have an interrail pass, do you think I will be able to reserve a seat easily at the station in Budapest? Thanks :D
