Reservation and supplement:
Day trains: All trains of VR can be used without a seat reservation. However, it is recommended to make seat reservations, especially when travelling longer distances, as regular tickets are sold including a seat reservation and reserved seats are not shown inside the trains – this means you would have to give up your seat in case another traveller has reserved it.

Night trains: Similar to the day trains, seat reservation on night trains is not compulsory but recommended. Besides regular seats, sleeper accommodation is also available which requires a reservation.

Good to know:
The Finnish rail network is not very dense, but all important cities are connected by rail. Starting from Helsinki, the main lines reach most parts of the country, where modern and comfortable trains offer a reliable service. They reach destinations as far as Kolari, Rovaniemi and Kemijärvi in the north, from where you have to continue by bus to explore the far north and eventually reach Nordkapp in Norway.
Timetables are available in our schedule planner or the Eurail app which include all trains and timings. You can also check on the national schedule planner.
There are no direct train connections from other Eurail countries to Finland. The best options to reach the country are the ferries from Stockholm to Turku and Helsinki and the bus connection from Lulea via Tornio/Haparanda to Kemi. This bus is included in your Eurail ticket. Moreover you can reach Finland by train from Russia or take a ferry from Tallinn or Travemünde.
If you are travelling on long distance trains without a reservation, you can ask the conductor for free seats – or take a seat towards the end of the carriage which are supposed to remain unreserved the longest.
Several ferries connect Finland to other countries on the Baltic Sea. Besides the connections from Helsinki and Turku to Stockholm there are also ferries from Helsinki to Saint Petersburg, Tallinn and Travemünde as well as from Vaasa to Umea.
