Can anyone please advise if there are Direct trains between Ljubljana and Budapest , journey time and whether booking needs to be done in advance . thanks

Do you travel with a rail pass or by point to point tickets?

The direct day train at 10:25h is free of reservation with a rail pass. Until end of august there is as well a direct overnight train: reservations can be bought in Slovenia at a station, but you can also try to get it in bordering countries.
