How about taking a bike with you on the train? Has anyone experience with that and do you have to pay for it ?

my experience:

I had already a small folding bicycle with me ... in the train you can put it in a back and that's it !! :)
I have a bike from this company: www.dahon.com
It was about 300 EUR ... expensive but good quality ...

but I also meet already travellers using just a normal old bike, without light and all the stuff ... they just putted off the wheels before entering the train and then did the bike under the seat and covered it with a cover.

:)

did they pay any special charges? (because here in Portugal you have to pay an extra to carry bikes or trains off weekends)
it seems like something good to take along (:

you have to pay always extra in the most countries.
so the best way - belive me - is to put the wheels off and hide the bike somewhere ...! :)

bike: 12kg
backpack: 15kg

when i used the bike, I puted my backpack on the carrier of my bike. i even had the backpack on my bike in the station until i entered the train.
so for me it was very comfortable. but on this tour i did not visited any big city ... only very very small towns, very small stations ...

either I used a hostel for sleeping... and there i could always fix it with a lock.
or I went out of the villages or small towns on a meadow. and there was nobody. :)
when traveling in a train, I had the bike under my seat... :)

I know that many slow train in Germany allow travelers to bring big bikes on.
If not, foldable bikes or put the wheels off and hide the bike somewhere are still good options.

More over, having a bike on trip is an awesome experience.

My question is: could it be possible to add on the website (or on the forrum) a section where we could list the train and country that allow bikes.

Thank you for your attention

hi Thierry... :)
I also reflected about a special bike section on the website ... it is really useful. I will make as well a new section for supplements... so then the supplements for bikes will added then as well ... :)

Non-folding bikes are not allowed on busy commuter trains during rush hour in the U.K. (The times vary and are specified in timetables.) At other times, and folding bikes at any time, it should be free.
