Hello everyone :)

I didn't find a topic about Netherlands in the forum, and because I intend to go there in the spring, with a friend of mine, I decide to create one.
Is there anyone who knows something about Amsterdam?
We will stay here for two or three days so we won't have a lot of time.

thanks :D

3 days in Amsterdam will be a sufficient introduction. Lots to see and do and you can do it mostly on foot. Rembrandt House, Anne Frank Museum, Van Gogh collection, Reichsmuseum; all can be found in any tourist guide and the prices are fair and subsidised if you are a student. Lots of sights and sounds; many friendly Dutch people and people from all over the world to meet. Lots of different music, pubs and clubs. Exercise caution with your belongings and avoid quiet streets, especially at night, but it's one of the better European cities for just mingling. Use a street plan to get around but, as many streets look almost identical with a canal and some trees and a coffee shop, expect to be lost at least 10% of the visit.

Have a great one.

Thanks a lot iaink :P

wow, Van Gogh is one of my favourite painters, I knew that he was a Dutch but I hadn't think that there is his collection in Amsterdam, this is really cool! Can you suggest me some regions or bar for amusement in the evening or in the night?

hahaha yes indeed it is little curious that the Netherlands missed from the forum :P

Well actually i am dutch, so i can answer much of your questions i think. For the bars and clubs it depends on what you want. I didn't went to a club in Amsterdam actually, but there are some nice places like de Melkweg (milkyway) and Paradiso. They both are located near Leidseplein. It's half an hour walk i think and about 10 minutes by tram from the central station. Actually it's a straight line south which is, i think, quite easy to find. Another interesting place is Waterloopleinmarkt, it's a market where you can buy all kinds of strange stuff, clothes, international products etc. A boat tour is also quite nice and if you're interested in modern architecture, Nemo (by Renzo Piano) is nice, but a little out of the route maybe.. I can tell you a lot of other places, so if you're interested, pm me...

Other things you maybe (?) want to do are going to the redlight district (be quick because the local government wants to close all 'houses') or using softdrugs (Amsterdam city of drugs..). Well, for weed and hasj, you should go to a coffeeshop (there are lots in the city centre). You can smoke there or somewhere else, but 'officially' it's forbidden to smoke drugs outside i think. Although i never heard people having trouble with the police while using weed or hasj. These drugs are both not very dangerous, weed makes most people a little slow and 'laughy', hasj has a quicker effect, but is pretty much the same (most people like weed more, because hasj can be bad sometimes). For mushrooms it's more difficult, you have to go to a smartshop the first day of your stay to get information and after three days you can come back to buy some. Mushrooms (paddo's in dutch) have a hallucinating effect and are really different from weed. They're more dangerous (i never tried it) and people who used it say you have to do it in a quiet place (forest or something) and always take someone with you, who don't use it, in case of a bad trip. Last summer some french girl commited suicide (jumped off a bridge) after using paddo's in Amsterdam, that's why it's more difficult for tourists to buy some. Sorry for the long text, i think the drugs thing is pretty important when you go to Amsterdam...

I’m trying to plan an interrail trip and one of the most interesting places for me is Amsterdam, for the weed of course. ;) So is it true that you can smoke almost everywhere an also buy drugs from many different places, legal coffee shops etc.?

If that is true, I could spend a whole month in there :P

Sorry for the bad english..

It's true that you can buy weed and hasj everywhere in the citycentre of Amsterdam, just go to a coffeeshop. For smoking, it's officially not allowed outside, so I should avoid busy places and places with much police (like big tourist attractions). A very nice place for smoking some weed is the Vondelpark I think... Another important thing you should know is that it's not allowed to have more than 5 grams of weed and/or hasj with you, so if you have more, you could be arrested by the police. It's a small chance, but I think you should know...

Does anyone know a cheap hostel or some kind of accommodation in the city?
Ive just seen hostels from 30€/night... I'd like to save money to be able to spend it in the coffee shops! :D :D

I know it is a really crowded city in summer.. how long in advance should i book the hostel (or whatever)..

Thnx!!

It is crowded in the summer, and It won't be that cheap I guess..
But maybe when you book in advance there is some place at very cheap hostels.
Or you can sleep outside maybe :P (when its good weather ;) )
If you use enough drugs, it probably doesn't matter anyway

Good evening,
Me and my friends, we are planinng to travel through Netherlands this summer. And first of all I`m interested in three cities: Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht. Are there any trains available with the Interrail pass that connect these cities????
Thanks in advance,
Victoria

Hi Victoria.

Yes they definitely are. Just use the FREE IC trains or REGIONAL trains and avoid using the expensive THALYS train.

For train schedules use this link: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

Concerning supplements read here: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation

Have a sunny trip, Peter :)

Can we use the interrail ticket also in Amsterdam for the busses and trams? Or would you suggest to by somewhat a ticket? We want to stay there for 3 days.

Hi Felix.
InterRail is not valid on the buses and trams in Amsterdam.
