Hey starsailor!

I see you made quite a plan here:)
I'm a greek student in Athens so i think i'm a good source for the town. :P
Well as far as it concerns Athens, don't bother visiting places around Athens cause there is nothing for you to see. There are some places in Athens that is a MUST but i honestly think that u should concetrate on the city's center!

There is a bus line for tourists etc that is circling around the most beautiful athenian sites and i think the ticket costs 3 euro (i think). of course you'll want to visit Akropolis and Parthenon then go and have a coffee or what down to Plaka/Monastiraki. At night you should visit either Plaka (lots of greek restaurants there) and Psiri (clubs, bars young ppl etc).

As far as it concerns historical museums etc in my opinion they are all the same, so if u visit the Parthenon Museum it's like visiting the rest of them:P

Finally, if you want further information about the town , bus routes etc you can send me a Personal Message or contact me via msn:)

Hi starsailor!

What time will you be around Rome-Florence-Venezia? It's about a week in your plans...! Great decision, but i think that you stay for longer in Rome and depart on 3rd day to Florence... unless you have problems with place to sleep... And around the Umbria-Toscana region is really worth to see (Perugia / Bolsena lake regions especially)... I'll be there (InterRailing all around Italy) 19-28th of October.

Greetings from Lithuania

1. Santorini is smaller so you will be able to see it all. Plus it has more dramatical sunsets and the ancient crater of the volcano. Kriti is to large for 1 day. If i were you i would go to Santorini and i would leave Crete for single destination holidays.

2. I don't know :P

Pronto!

I start my InterRail in 2 weeks, so we must discuss our plans if you want to join. We (me and my girl) arrive to Firenze late evening 19th of October. We'll stay a day there and will start from East coast trip by treno regionale and end to Roma-Toscana mountaintreno regionale, so exact plan is like this:

21th - Firenze - Faenza - Rimini (night there)
22th - Rimini - Ancona - Foglino (17eur hostel there)
23th - Foglino - Perugia, night at Pontefelcino (20km from Perugia)
24th - Pontefelcino - Terni - Roma (well there we arrive!)
25th - Roma (all day there) - Firenze
26th - gone by car to Pisa (private, sorry)
27th - Firenze - Firenze

on 28th of October we'll leave to Austria/Innsbruck, 29th - to Frankfurt and fly back to Lithuania on 31th from Hahn.

What about our trip - we are planning to visit Rimini-Ancona (this route is very similar to Miami-Montegobay in US), we'll go partying there, then we'll do mountain train route, visiting small villages and countryside... That's the most interesting i think.. And in the middle of the mountain ride we'll go to Roma to check it's history :)
We are planning to stay in cheap hostels (up to 20 eur, except Rome - there's 30 eur minimum, unless dormitory suits you, then you'll get it from 16-18 eur).. and don't worry - some countryside hostels (like in Foligno, Pontefelcino and so) are as good as good 3-star *** hotels. So we'll not sleep outside:) but if you wish, you can :)
And what about food - well, my girl is Italian-cookmaster :)

PM me or MSN :) we'll exchange phone numbers for easier contacting...
Greetings from rainland - Lithuania :)

Adios amigo :)

@starsailor: I will agree with the fellow Greek concerning Athens. As for the island of santorini now. The place is beautiful but is almost empty in fall/winter [maybe if you visit the island during the weekend it will be better]. As for Crete as Flower says is too big for one or two days. On the other hand you may visit one of the major cities [like Chania for example] and spend your two days there.
My advice: Santorini if you have company :) and wish to relax; Crete if you wish to see more people.

As for your question concerning your transportation through Greece and Turkey. My advice is to stick to the train as much as you can. The reason is that during fall/winter the ferries are usually slower and some routes may be cancelled or delayed, fact that may disrupt your plan.

Hope you have a nice time in Greece!

Yeah of course as the other fellow greek stated if u eventually decide to visit Crete just go to a town (Chania or Rethimno).

In my opinion it would be better if u were to visis Thessaloniki, it's a nice town with many students, restaurants bars etc and especially alive in Fall.

Santorini has dynamic and dramatical sunsets however. But u have to go in Summer :/
