Laptop on Europe trip

Mm, laptop on interrail? Relatively heavy, easily broken, attractive to thieves, possible electricity and charging problems, wireless is not available everywhere and is often not free. Why bother?

I wouldn't bother. As has been mentioned, it's a hassle to cart around and your travel insurance is likely not to cover something that expensive. Many insurance companies place a single item limit of £200 or so on the policy and let's face it, if it gets stolen/ broken you're not going to get a new laptop for £200. Even if the computers in the hostel are always busy most cities have internet cafes for a decent price nowadays. You'd probably be better just buying a 1-2GB memory card for your camera, that way you don't need to upload photos every few days.

ummmm, well all that stuff u2 note about expensive etc etc. i had noted at the beginning so yeah thinking about it i might just leave it hear.

also if all goes to plan, ill be getting my nikon d80 b4 i go, causen im a photographer so yeah....a 1gb memo card is DEFINATLY on the cards lol :) ....knowing me though, ill need more then that lol. ah well, im gonna take a couple of blank cds to copy the photos ontoo, incase i do run out of space

I often have my latop with me ... because I have to satisfy some clients of me and need my software and everything. but I do not like it. even if it is a 12display and less than 2kg. you have always to pay attention not to get it stolen. ||
and in hostels there are always computers as well as in internet cafes. if possible I use these locations. :)

I am planning to take my laptop (it is a fujutsu and only weights 1.8kg with battery 15.4). For charging, I am going to purchase a solar panel from Germany (cost £45- 1kg and 38cm by 50cm 2.5cm which fits in the samsunet wheeli backpack!). I am traveling round western europe slightly entering Eastern europe and from the bottom of Italy sailing to Greece and then travelling to turkey and continuing to Iran (I mainly need my laptop there as I am a web designer and after the few days holiday, I will be recruiting web designers there! :o
Does anyone thinks I am crazy to carry my laptop for around 6000miles across so many countries?

A solar panel that size en a backpack? I would'nt dare.. It will break like glass.. Try finding the price on having it send to your final destination instead, its a lot more safe imo...

for your information: you will find in nearly every european high-speed-train connections to get [b]electricity [/b](don't know the english word - I mean you can plug in your laptop to get electricity). don't forget an adapter for the different european countries and electricity systems.

in hostels you often have internet access ... or have a look on Fon.com ... a nice community and system. I use it to have free internet access with my laptop everywhere in europe! and it works !!! :)

i was thinking about buying one of those Eeepc laptops. In fact i'm typing off one right now (not mine) and all in all i'd say its a good idea to bring one as they're lightweight and small. is there wifi on trains and in trainstations???

yes the Eeepc seems to be very nice ...! :)
there is often wifi available at stations and even often in the high speed trains like TGV (France; actually on some connections it is even for free), ICEs (Germany) and so on ...
but also have a look on maps.fon.com ... I live with this solution. it normally works well ... or you look for a bar or coffee shop with free wifi (also very often available) ... for emergencies I have then an extra mobile-card for my laptop ... it is not cheap but okay... it is then 12 EUR for 24h access. :)

I for one have a Nokia N800 I will bring with me. It's an internet tablet, bigger than most mobile phones but a lot smaller than any laptop. Hopefully it should be good enough to do the things I need (hostel reservation, train schedule lookups, etc). I would love to bring a light laptop, but I see what Peter means: I would constantly worry about it being stolen, and it would add weight. I'm a big fan of traveling light :-)

I love my MacBook - but I could not imagine to put it in my back for inter railing. There are a lot of Internet-Terminals in nearly every station on. So a IPod Touch will do it compl.

Im looking forward to having a break from all things internet, work and laptop-like. I spend far too much time using them all year round a month without them will be good. I think for me a phone with music, camera and memory cards is enough.

surely there will be plenty of internet cafes around to use internet etc? i hadnt even considered bringing a laptop, seems a tad excessive really. but if you want to get robbed..... :os
