Dear railers,
This summer I will undertake my first interrail trip. We (my brother and me) are Travelling from Liège - Lyon - Barcelona - Valencia - Madrid. From Madrid we will take a plane back to Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
We've finally started arranging the train reservations, but got stuck on the train reservation between Barcelona - Valencia. The Interrail map shows that this connection takes about 3,5 hours, but when I try planning this it only shows 5 to 5,5 hour train trips (with a transfer in Madrid?).
Somehow I cannot find this 3,5 hour direct connection between Barcelona and Valencia..
Can someone help me please.

The Interrail map is not the best resource for planning.. ;)
There is a number of fast trains (Euromed or Talgo) taking between 3h and 3h40 for the trip, the reservation is 6,50€. Also, you could travel by regional train - there are two connecting services and one direct train. These _should_ be free of reservation but please ask locally to be sure (and tell me afterwards, thank you!). Travel time 4-5h.
Where do you look for these connections?

Hi.
Have a look at the schedules here to find your perfect connection. Including details for reservations, etc.

There is the one free connection listed but in the detail information is marked EUR 4 as reservation fee - this is due to the confusing reservation system of RENFE. Sometimes required, sometimes not - ask locally at the station.

Thanks for your quick responses.
It seems I do not fully understand the whole interrail system, as I presumed I had to make all reservations through the reservations.interrail.eu website. This is not the case right?

No, the usual way to buy reservations is directly at train stations. The NL is the only country I can think of where there is an extra charge on that...
For some trains, reservations can also be made online - notably in France, Italy, Sweden, Czech Republic. The reservation service of interrail.eu sends reservations by post only, which is useful only if you want to prebook all your routes before you leave. However, you can of course travel without making prior reservations and enjoy the full freedom of Interrail. You can then buy reservations as necessary on the go at stations.
