It appears one can get to Pristina? and Sofia, apparently...but are there other connections to Skopje? Times/prices? air/rail/bus considered!

The line through Skopje goes north/south from Nis to Thessaloniki - though the Greek section is currently closed. You can take a Dolmus or bus to Pristina

Yeah I did find the Skopje to Pristina train..although one wonders if it continues into Serbia...? or vice versa?!

no of course not-THAT train. THere are UNMIK run trains on some portions of the rails in Kosovo-not over borders. in fact the Skopje train is reported to be highly unrelaible as to running or cancelled. Unless you are 100% railfreak: there will be plenty of buses insetad.
