What is the best route to take from Budapest to Dubrovnik on June 1st? I understand there may be connections but I cannot find the routes that were suggested for us to take.

Well, the closest you can get to Dubrovnik using the train is Split since there is no train connection to Dubronvik. So the option of travelling there by train is ruled out.
However, you can either rent a car or use a bus instead in order to get there. The intercity bus network in Croatia is really good.
So you can either go: Budapest-Split using the train (takes approximately 16 hours) and from Split take the bus to Dubronvik (another 4 hours) or take bus 680 from Budapest directly to Dubrovnik in 15 hours (it runs once per week, see Eurolines for schedule).
