We\'re traveling from Rome to Barcelona for 10 days in September. We\'re traveling exclusively by train, and I\'m looking for some advice on one or two smaller cities to reasonably stop in over-night along the way? Perpignan? Monaco? Nice? I\'ve read about the little yellow train but can\'t figure out how it connects exactly for our journey? I know there are a lot of options, so we\'re mostly interested in just exploring a little in places not totally overrun by tourists and taking in the food and culture of the city. Any insights and opinions are welcome! Thanks!

Hi NicoleElise,

from Perpignan, you can do a day trip, including the Little Yellow Train, which will take you to Barcelona. This can be done as follows:

1. Stay overnight in Perpignan.
2. Take the bus replacement service at 8:16 to Villefranche Vernet les Bains (The train line between Perpignan and Villefranche Vernet les Bains is currently closed due to construction)
3. From Villefranche Vernet les Bains, take the Little Yellow Train to Latour de Carol-Enveitg. Tickets from Perpignan to Latour de Carol-Enveitg are available at rail.shop/sncf or locally, at Perpignan station. They should cost about 30 Euros for an adult, the whole way. Interrail is valid.
4. From Latour de Carol-Enveitg, take the "Rodalies" suburban train to Barcelona. Tickets can only be bought onboard the train, they are not for sale at Latour de Carol-Enveitg station. You can view the timetable here: http://rodalies.gencat.cat/en/horaris/ (Type in "La Tor de Querol-Enveig" (that is, Latour de Carol-Enveitg in Catalan :) ) to "Barcelona-Sants" ) The ticket should cost about 20 Euros for an adult. Interrail is not valid on this section.

The last train from Latour de Carol-Enveitg to Barcelona leaves at 18:52, so you have plenty of time to explore the town. It\'s beautiful place, and well worth staying an extra night. It\'s a beautiful and leisurely day trip through the Pyrenees; I highly recommend it.

Other than that, I definitely recommend you stay in smaller places, off the beaten track. You can do your own research and see what you like. The Mediterranean cost is very well connected by rail, and there are a lot of options for hiking, biking and swimming.

Have a nice trip!
