I can add from asking at Vilnius train station that if you buy the ticket at the station (same day is usually possible) it costs about 9 euros for Vilnius-Minsk and 8 euros for Minsk-Vilnius.

they are even planning to speed up the trains and add morwe trains-local seats only. And to have-a really innovative way for any forer Soviet dictatorrun country- to have checks on board the trains while running.
In the indeed very unlikely case you find a train full-no panick-there are plenty of buses too. IN the main station of Vilinus are 2-3 agencies that can deal with getting you a visa-pretty quick too if wanted-this will avoid the tipical frustration if in your ignorance you decide to visit the Embassy yourself (as they do some 'presents'' to underpaid emb.staff to have it all smoothed out-this is also pretty usual @ Russky embassies in some parts of this world)

A friend of mine travelled this route and he also noted that the train now stops for about 30 minutes at the (heavily guarded) border. Checks on the train would speed up travel time greatly.

30 min is superfast for these parts of the world and their controls. On those borders where they also have to change the bogies, due to the wider rails, it can take 4-6 hours (like Rossye-China).
Do not expect that this is any faster on a bus.
