Hi all,
Me and a couple of friends are interrailing this summer. We haven't done this before, but we thought it would be fun if we take a guitar or two along.
Those of you who have been backpacking before - do you think this is a bad idea? Do you think that the guitars will become a severe annoyance to us on the journey?
Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated :)

I've the same problem, next summer. We are five to go in the G zone (Itali, greece, turkey), four guitarists. We think that we'll take only one guitar between us, mine, the cheapest :| (I've heard there are a lot of pick pocket in Italy, in trainstations, be careful if you go there) . If you have one guitar between two or three, you'll be able to share it. Take other instruments (harmonica, percussions, etc). It could be nice to learn one during the trip in the train, i think. Sorry for the english, i'm french.[/b]

that's a problem because a guitar is quite big and when you have to carry your bag (10 kilos) and your guitar, it's quite annoying.I've been on the road during only 3 days, with a little bag and it was very annoying sometimes, so for 15 days and with a such big bag, it will be necesserally much more. But it's just my opinion. When you want to visit some thing and you have to carry 15 kilos, it's not very comfortable....

Time to learn a lighter instrument.

I`m not a guitarplayer myself, but I know someone, who took his guitar on an IR-trip, some years ago. His intention was to sit beside a romantic fire, with a nice girl at his side, and to play some songs for her. At least, he thought, it would attract the girls if he would play the guitar.

He finally came back without the guitar, because someone broke it on a train. He said he had put it in this baggage compartment above the seats, and some other guy put his bag beside it. When he wanted to get his bag to get out of the train, something got stuck to the guitarbag, and he pulled down both. The guitar crashed on the top of a seat and broke.

He also said that he found it annoying to have to lug it everywhere, so he would not do it again.

So, maybe you should start to sing. If you run out of money, you can sit infront of a supermarket/warehouse/mall and sing. If you are good, the folks will give you money so that you will continue, if you are not so good, they will give you money to make you stop ;) Just kidding..

If you are not a good player, definitely it will be a big problem for those around you :)
but for a backpacker I don't think it is a problem, on the contrary it is a good way to meet new people.
